Northern Greece (Macedonia & Thrace, including Thessaloniki and Halkidiki)
High summer brings hot, dry conditions inland with afternoons that frequently climb into uncomfortably warm territory in Thessaloniki and the interior. Coastal Halkidiki has cooling sea breezes but beach sections can be crowded; the Aegean side may see occasional meltemi gusts that make boating choppy. Nights provide relief near the coast; travelers should schedule outdoor activities for morning or evening and be sunscreen- and water-wise during extended outdoor sightseeing.
Central Greece & Athens (Attica, Evia, Delphi, Parnassos)
May is a favourite for visiting Athens and the nearby islands, with warm, dry days and long evenings ideal for rooftop restaurants and archaeological touring. The sea is becoming inviting around the Saronic Gulf, and Herodotus and ancient sites near Delphi are superbly accessible. Pack light layers for cool nights and a hat for strong sun; this month often has the best combination of good weather and manageable crowds.
Peloponnese (Nafplio, Olympia, Mani, Taygetos)
May offers reliably warm days and very pleasant sea temperatures for early swimmers, with beaches near Pylos and the Mani becoming attractive. Wildflowers carpet terraces and countryside roads are excellent for cycling and classic drives. Expect more services and open tavernas, but still well short of peak-summer crowds; a light jacket for evening is usually enough.
Ionian Islands (Corfu, Kefalonia, Zakynthos, Lefkada)
May is transition to high season with warm, sunny days, especially in Corfu and Lefkada; the sea becomes inviting for early swims. Island roads and beaches gain energy as tavernas reopen and boat tours operate more frequently. Expect more crowds than in spring but still manageable; bring sun protection and a light sweater for the occasional cooler evening breeze.
Aegean Islands - Cyclades & Dodecanese (Mykonos, Santorini, Naxos, Rhodes, Kos)
May blooms into warm, dry weather with strong appeal for beachgoers and sailors: watersports and charter trips pick up and tavernas open fully. Expect more reliable ferry schedules and rising prices toward the end of the month as summer approaches. The meltemi is usually not yet at full force, so small-boat itineraries are still comfortable; pack a windproof layer for blustery evenings.
Crete (Chania, Heraklion, Agios Nikolaos, Samaria Gorge)
May is reliably warm with very pleasant sea temperatures along the southern coast; swimming and diving are excellent around Elafonisi and the southern beaches. Trails and rural guesthouses are active and this is one of Crete’s best months for long coastal walks and archaeological touring without peak-season bustle. Pack breathable clothes for daytime, a light fleece for higher-altitude hikes, and book popular coastal accommodations in advance.
