Northern Greece (Macedonia & Thrace, including Thessaloniki and Halkidiki)
By late spring the plains warm significantly and the olive groves around Kavala and Kilkis emerald into leaf; daytime excursions are pleasant and insect-free. Beach resorts on the Kassandra peninsula start opening and the sea begins to warm, though water may still be bracing for swimmers. Expect more hours of sunshine and easier ferry crossings to Thassos; this is an excellent time for hiking around Meteora before the summer heat and crowds arrive.
Central Greece & Athens (Attica, Evia, Delphi, Parnassos)
By April the city warms into comfortable daytime temperatures and the olive groves around Nafplio and the Peloponnese show fresh green. Ferry timetables to Evia and nearby islands pick up, and hiking routes on the Parnassos and Mount Helicon are excellent before summer heat. Expect festival activity around Easter when the city and countryside fill with religious processions; book accommodation ahead of Holy Week if you plan to stay.
Peloponnese (Nafplio, Olympia, Mani, Taygetos)
April is one of the Peloponnese’s most agreeable months, warm enough for comfortable seaside walks and long hikes on Taygetos without midday heat. Ancient Olympia and the Corinth Canal see increased day-trip traffic but remain manageable before high summer. Pack a mix of layers for cool mornings and sun protection for midday; local Easter celebrations can fill small towns, so book if traveling during Holy Week.
Ionian Islands (Corfu, Kefalonia, Zakynthos, Lefkada)
April warms noticeably and many guesthouses reopen for spring; beaches are still quiet but coastal hikes and boat trips to sea caves start to run. Zakynthos begins to show signs of the loggerhead turtle season approaching and tour operators prepare for nesting months. Travelers should expect pleasant daytime temperatures, occasional showers, and increasingly frequent ferry services between the islands and the mainland.
Aegean Islands - Cyclades & Dodecanese (Mykonos, Santorini, Naxos, Rhodes, Kos)
April is often sunny and comfortably warm for sightseeing without intense heat; ancient sites on Naxos and Delos are easy to explore without crowds. The Aegean can still produce north winds on some days, particularly in the Cyclades, affecting sailing and some boat tours. This month is excellent for photography and hiking; book popular sunset restaurants on Santorini in advance on weekends.
Crete (Chania, Heraklion, Agios Nikolaos, Samaria Gorge)
April regularly offers warm, sunny days ideal for long walks and early-season beachcombing; coastal towns reopen fully and boat services increase. Samarîa Gorge usually opens for the season in late spring, and wildflower displays on the slopes draw walkers before the summer heat. Bring comfortable hiking shoes, sun protection for afternoon walks and a light jacket for cooler sea breezes in the evenings.
