Northern Greece (Macedonia & Thrace, including Thessaloniki and Halkidiki)

By November, cold air intrusions from the Balkans make nights notably chilly across the region and the first snows can dust higher summits like Olympus. Thessaloniki sees increased rainfall and fewer tourists, which is ideal for museum visits and sampling hearty northern cuisine. Roads into mountainous areas may be slippery; bring insulated layers and check local weather for any early-season snow closures if you plan to head into the Pindus.

Central Greece & Athens (Attica, Evia, Delphi, Parnassos)

September brings relief from peak heat, cleaner skies and very pleasant conditions for hiking on Parnassos or visiting the Acropolis without crowds. The sea remains warm and islands close to Athens are quieter than in July; harvest time begins around local vineyards and olive groves. This is an excellent month for combining city culture, open-air dining and day trips to Delphi - light layers will handle cool mornings and warm afternoons.

Peloponnese (Nafplio, Olympia, Mani, Taygetos)

September cools pleasantly, the sea stays warm and the summer crowds thin rapidly - this is a top month for combining ruins, beaches and wine tasting. Olive harvest activity begins and rural roads will show agricultural traffic; vineyard tours are available and scenic drives across the Taygetos foothills are rewarding. Expect comfortable days and progressively cooler nights, so pack a light sweater for evenings.

Ionian Islands (Corfu, Kefalonia, Zakynthos, Lefkada)

September is one of the best months: the sea stays warm, summer crowds thin, and the weather is reliably pleasant for both beaches and inland exploring. Olive trees and vineyards start preparing for harvest, and many operators reduce prices after Labor Day; boat trips to sea caves or the Blue Caves on Kefalonia are excellent. Pack a sun hat and a light jacket for cooler evenings by the water.

Aegean Islands - Cyclades & Dodecanese (Mykonos, Santorini, Naxos, Rhodes, Kos)

September offers softer heat, calmer atmospheres and warm seas - this is prime time for visitors who want the summer vibe without peak crowds. The meltemi eases, ferry cancellations become rarer, and daytrips to archaeological sites are more pleasant. Travelers will find prices easing after Labour Day and can enjoy swimming well into the month; pack a light sweater for cooler harbor evenings.

Crete (Chania, Heraklion, Agios Nikolaos, Samaria Gorge)

September cools just enough to make hiking and sightseeing comfortable again, with sea temperatures still warm and the crowds thinning. Samaria Gorge closes during late autumn, but September is still a good month to walk in many lower areas and enjoy wine and olive harvest activity beginning in places. Pack light layers for warm days and cooler evenings, and expect calmer seas that suit swimming and boating.
