Grand Kremlin Palace
Palace 19th-century grand state palace within the Moscow Kremlin
Part of the Moscow Kremlin complex, the Grand Kremlin Palace (built 1837-1849) served as the tsar’s Moscow residence and now hosts state ceremonies. Visitors focus on Kremlin architecture, the Armoury and Cathedral Square, and guided tours when interior access is available.
The Grand Kremlin Palace is a large 19th century palace within the Moscow Kremlin constructed as the official residence for the Russian emperor and built between the late 1830s and 1840s by the architect Konstantin Thon. It functions today as part of the Kremlin’s state complex and contains major ceremonial halls used for official events.
Key interior attractions are the series of richly decorated ceremonial halls and reception rooms, which display 19th century historic interiors and decorative schemes. The palace is notable for its scale within the Kremlin and for housing state receptions and formal events rather than operating as a public museum throughout.
Commissioned and built under Tsar Nicholas I in the mid 19th century, the palace was intended to provide a modern imperial residence integrated into the Kremlin’s existing medieval structures. Over time it has served imperial, Soviet and modern Russian state functions while retaining much of its 19th century interior character.
The palace sits inside the walled Moscow Kremlin complex on the Kremlin’s eastern side, overlooking Red Square and the historic centre of Moscow. It is adjacent to other Kremlin cathedrals and administrative buildings and is reached via the Kremlin grounds during official tours.
- Visitor access: Access to most interiors is controlled and normally available only via Kremlin state tour tickets, not open to general public walk-in access.
What to See #
- State and ceremonial halls: A suite of state and ceremonial rooms built for imperial receptions and official functions, forming the principal public spaces of the palace complex.
- Historic interiors: A sequence of ornate reception halls and historic interiors designed in the mid-19th century, many used for formal state events and preserved as part of the Kremlin ensemble.
How to Get to Grand Kremlin Palace #
The Grand Kremlin Palace is inside the Moscow Kremlin complex on Borovitskaya Ploshchad next to Red Square. Take the Moscow Metro to Châtelet-Les Halles - sorry, correction: to the nearby stations Borovitskaya / Aleksandrovsky Sad / Biblioteka Imeni Lenina / Okhotny Ryad and walk about 5-10 minutes to the Kremlin entrances at Manezhnaya/Red Square. By car it is in the city centre (no long drives required); many city buses and taxis serve the central Kremlin/Red Square area.
Tips for Visiting Grand Kremlin Palace #
- Reserve access well in advance: the Grand Kremlin Palace interior is not freely open like a public museum - entry is on organised tours or special tickets issued by the State Kremlin Museums, so buy tickets from the official museum site ahead and check for closures due to state ceremonies.
- Arrive early to clear security and maximise time in the Kremlin complex: set your visit to coincide with your booked time slot and allow extra time for bag checks and passport control at the entrance, otherwise you can lose most of your allotted tour time.
- Coordinate other Kremlin sights when booking: if you want to see the Armoury Chamber or Cathedral Square as well, book those tickets for the same day and plan the order with the official schedule so you don't miss timed entries when leaving/returning to the palace.
Best Time to Visit Grand Kremlin Palace #
Best visited late spring through early autumn for milder weather and longer daylight; indoor Kremlin attractions are quieter in winter.
