Gothenburg Botanical Garden is a large public botanical garden in Gothenburg, founded in 1912 and developed through the 20th century. The site covers roughly 40 hectares and combines formal beds, rock gardens and wooded parkland.

Collections include a large rhododendron area, extensive rock garden plantings and several greenhouses that present tropical and subtropical species. Many beds are labelled and arranged for study, and the garden is used for research and public education as well as leisure.

The garden was established by the city to replace older, smaller botanical displays and has grown into one of northern Europe’s notable plant collections. Management has combined conservation, display and scientific work since its founding.

Located on the western side of central Gothenburg near the university area, the garden sits within city parkland and is reachable by tram and local bus services from the city centre.

• Best time to visit: Peak display seasons are late spring for bulbs and rhododendrons, and midsummer when many perennials are at their best.
• Visitor facilities: Paths and labelled beds make the garden suitable for self-guided walks; a café is on site near the main entrance.

• Rock Garden: A compact alpine rock garden featuring high-altitude and cliff plants arranged in stone terraces and crevices; one of the garden’s most photographed areas.
• Rhododendron beds: A large rhododendron collection that is prominent in late spring and early summer when many varieties flower.
• Greenhouses: Several historic greenhouses housing tropical and subtropical collections, including seasonal displays and conservatory plants.

• Visit in late spring or early summer for the peak of the flowering displays and outdoor collections; allot 2-3 hours to see the extensive outdoor beds and greenhouse collections.
• Arrive by public transit or bike when possible-parking near the main entrance can be limited on busy weekends, and the garden is well connected by local transit.
• Don't miss the greenhouses for tropical and cactus collections; these are indoors and provide a different set of displays that contrast with the outdoor seasonal plantings.
