Georgia, in the Caucasus between Europe and Asia, became a nomad favourite thanks to one remarkable rule: citizens of around 95 countries can stay up to a year without a visa. Add Tbilisi’s old town, wine bars and creative scene, the Black Sea at Batumi, dramatic mountains, famous food and wine, and low costs, and it is easy to see the appeal.
2026 brought changes, though. Travel insurance became mandatory for visitors in January, and from March a new work permit system requires permits for paid activity in Georgia, with its effect on remote workers for foreign clients still unclear. Politics has also been tense since 2024. This guide covers Georgia as a whole. For one city in depth, open its guide.
Why Georgia Works for Remote Workers#
- A year visa-free. For citizens of the US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia and many more.
- Low costs. A comfortable month costs about $1,300 to $1,600.
- Tbilisi. A characterful capital with cafes, wine bars, sulphur baths and a creative scene.
- Mountains and sea. The Greater Caucasus for hiking and skiing, and the Black Sea in summer.
- Food and wine. Khachapuri, khinkali and 8,000 years of winemaking.
- Easy banking. Georgian banks open accounts for foreigners quickly.
Who Georgia Suits (and Who It Doesn't)#
Georgia suits budget-conscious nomads, people who want a long stay without visa paperwork, food and wine lovers, and anyone working European hours. It suits you less if you want certainty about work rules after the 2026 changes, if political instability concerns you, or if you need US hours (Tbilisi is 8 or 9 hours ahead of New York).
The Best Bases in Georgia#

Many nomads also spend time in Kutaisi, Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) and the ski resort of Gudauri. Our where to base yourself in Georgia page compares five bases.

What It Costs to Live in Georgia#
A comfortable month for one person costs about $1,300 in Batumi and $1,600 in Tbilisi. A lean budget is about $900 to $1,000. Rents in Tbilisi rose after 2022 but remain low by European standards. These are ballpark figures.

Georgia is on UTC+4 all year, with no daylight saving: 3 or 4 hours ahead of London.
Weather by Region#
| Region | Best months | Plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Tbilisi | April to June, September to October | Hot summers (35°C+); cold, grey winters. |
| Batumi and the Black Sea | May to October | Very wet in autumn and winter. |
| Mountains (Kazbegi, Svaneti, Gudauri) | June to September for hiking; December to March for skiing | Snow closes some roads in winter. |
Internet and Staying Online#
Fibre from Magti and Silknet is cheap and widely available in cities. Magti has the best mobile coverage, and prepaid SIMs are cheap and easy with a passport.
Getting Between Bases#
Trains and marshrutka minibuses link Tbilisi, Kutaisi and Batumi; the Tbilisi to Batumi train takes about five hours. Bolt is cheap in cities. Kutaisi’s airport has low-cost flights to Europe. Roads are dangerous: driving standards are poor, so be careful.
Health and Insurance#
Private clinics in Tbilisi are good for most needs; serious cases sometimes go to Turkey or Europe. Insurance is now mandatory for visitors. Get nomad health insurance.
Rules Worth Knowing#
- Insurance is required for visitors since January 2026.
- Work permits are required for paid activity in Georgia since March 2026.
- Drugs carry strict penalties.
- Politics: large protests have taken place in Tbilisi since late 2024. Avoid demonstrations and check your government’s advice.
- Russian-occupied regions (Abkhazia and South Ossetia) can’t be entered legally from Russia, and entering them can cause problems.
