Libreville & Northwest Coast (Estuaire and Ogooué-Maritime)

Downpours usually remain frequent in May, and Libreville experiences long, humid days with sudden thunderstorms-expect wet clothes if you spend long stretches outside. The rainforest runoff swells rivers close to the coast, sometimes delaying road transfers to places such as Port-Gentil; bring quick-dry clothing and waterproof bags. Birdwatching in coastal forests can be rewarding as forest trails become quieter with fewer visitors.

Central Rainforest & Lopé-Ivindo (Lopé, Ivindo National Park, Ogooué basin)

May remains wet across central Gabon, with daily thunderstorms and prolonged periods of rainfall that keep the canopy dripping. Many remote lodges operate on limited schedules, and some river crossings become impassable except by boat-expect itinerary changes and longer transport times. The payoff is dramatic scenery: swollen rivers, increased bird activity, and near-empty trails for those who can handle the conditions.

Northern Highlands & Woleu-Ntem (Bitam, Oyem, north border)

May often reaches the wettest point of the year in the north, with several consecutive rainy days possible and waterlogged secondary roads the rule rather than the exception. Town-based activities continue but expect frequent interruptions for outdoor excursions; river levels are high and some crossings become hazardous. Accommodations in larger towns remain open but plan for delays when heading into more remote reserves.

Southeast Highlands & Haut-Ogooué (Franceville, Moanda, Bakoumba)

May remains wet and often damp for extended periods; visibility across the plateaus can be reduced by low cloud and continuous showers. Road travel slows and river crossings become riskier, so plan for buffer days when moving between Franceville, Bakoumba and other sites. The wet conditions suit botanists and birdwatchers who find more species active and floral displays at their peak.

Southern Coast & Loango-Mayumba (Loango National Park, Mayumba, Nyanga)

May continues heavy rains and high humidity, with swollen rivers meeting the sea and many inland routes becoming slow-going. Road access to Mayumba and Nyanga is less predictable-4x4 transfers often take much longer-so build in transfer buffers and expect some itinerary reshuffling. The landscape is intensely green and waterfalls are replenished but travel requires patience.
