Gabon in June: Weather, Crowds & What to Expect

Libreville & Northwest Coast (Estuaire and Ogooué-Maritime)

A noticeable change arrives in June as the coast moves toward the drier, cooler season; rains taper and mornings are misty but comfortable in Libreville. Sea breezes strengthen and humidity drops, making walks along the Corniche pleasant and boat schedules more dependable. This is one of the better months for travel logistics and overland trips to nearby reserves.

Central Rainforest & Lopé-Ivindo (Lopé, Ivindo National Park, Ogooué basin)

Early June sees a marked reduction in rain and humidity as the region moves into the drier, cooler season; mornings can be misty but daylight is clearer for long jungle walks. Trails firm up quickly, making this one of the best periods for multi-day treks in Lopé and for wildlife photography along river edges. Scheduling is easier-air transfers and park access are more reliable, so it’s a practical time for a first visit.

June starts the drier, cooler spell across the highlands - mornings are crisp and the air noticeably less muggy than during the rains. This is an excellent time for overland travel and exploring forest trails around Oyem, as tracks firm up and wildlife becomes easier to track without dense understory growth. Pack a light jacket for mornings and evenings.

Southeast Highlands & Haut-Ogooué (Franceville, Moanda, Bakoumba)

June sees a transition to drier, clearer weather in the southeast; mornings are cool and daylight is crisp, improving conditions for trekking and site visits. Roads firm up and overland travel becomes easier, so this marks a practical time for longer drives across Haut-Ogooué. Bring a light fleece for mornings and evenings at elevation.

Southern Coast & Loango-Mayumba (Loango National Park, Mayumba, Nyanga)

June is a welcome shift: rains drop off substantially and the southern coastline becomes easier to negotiate with firmer tracks and calmer seas. This is an excellent time for boat-based wildlife trips in Loango and for coastal birding as water levels stabilize; lodges operate fully and overland transfers run on schedule.
