Libreville & Northwest Coast (Estuaire and Ogooué-Maritime)

The long rains are underway by April, and the coast sees strong, often daily, tropical showers that turn the city green but make some low-lying streets impassable. Ferry crossings to small islands like Corisco and Loango approaches are more likely to be cancelled for safety, and beachfront tracks get muddy-4x4s are helpful for reaching remote lodges. Hotel rates are lower, and the heavier showers do a good job of clearing any earlier haze.

Central Rainforest & Lopé-Ivindo (Lopé, Ivindo National Park, Ogooué basin)

April is within the long rainy season and the rainforest is at its most saturated: trails are muddy, rivers are high, and waterfalls such as those in Ivindo (e.g., Kongou Falls) are at full volume and spectacularly loud. Photography is rewarding but waterproof protection for cameras is essential; trekking becomes slower and requires sturdy footwear. This is a low visitor period, so travel costs and crowds are reduced but prepare for wet, uncomfortable stretches on multi-day hikes.

Northern Highlands & Woleu-Ntem (Bitam, Oyem, north border)

April tends to be wetter than earlier months with daily showers more common, particularly around Oyem and Bitam where local rivers begin to swell. Road conditions deteriorate on lesser-traveled routes and remote villages may become more isolated; allow extra travel time and consider local guidance before venturing off the main roads. For birdwatchers, the forest edge species remain active and visible between storms.

Southeast Highlands & Haut-Ogooué (Franceville, Moanda, Bakoumba)

April is typically inside the heart of the long rainy season, with persistent showers and swollen streams across Haut-Ogooué; Moanda’s red-earth roads get deeply rutted. Hikes become more demanding and some remote lodges may reduce services during particularly heavy periods. On the plus side, the countryside is lush and waterfalls are most impressive-photographs require weatherproofing for equipment.

Southern Coast & Loango-Mayumba (Loango National Park, Mayumba, Nyanga)

April typically brings sustained heavy rainfall to the southern coast; Loango’s famed tidal flats and forest trails become saturated and certain guided safaris are curtailed. Boat trips along the coast may be limited on stormy days; the mud makes walking more strenuous but also concentrates wildlife near higher ground. Bring waterproof clothing and expect fewer tourists and lower prices at lodges.
