Fira City
Principal town on Santorini island, Cyclades
Clinging to Santorini's caldera rim, Fira pulls crowds with narrow alleys of white houses, cliffside restaurants and a museum of the island's volcanic past. Cable-car trips, sunset terraces and nearby vineyards make straightforward day plans.
Why Visit Fira?#
Perched along Santorini’s caldera cliffs, Fira draws visitors with its cliffside views, narrow whitewashed alleys and blue-domed churches framed by endless Aegean light. Nightlife concentrates around the caldera-edge bars and cliffside restaurants, while local flavors-Assyrtiko wines and tomato keftedes-give a taste of island terroir. Daytrippers often stroll to the nearby village of Oia for its famous sunset, then return to Fira’s lively market and museum scene. It’s a blend of dramatic geology, classic Cycladic architecture and strong wine culture.

How to Get to Fira#
Fira is Santorini’s main town; most visitors arrive by plane into Santorini (Thira) National Airport (JTR) or by ferry to Athinios port. From the port or airport regular buses and taxis run to the caldera-side centre of Fira.
Santorini (Thira) National Airport (JTR): The island’s airport is 6-7 km from Fira. From JTR take the local KTEL bus to Fira (about €2, 20-25 minutes) or a taxi (roughly €20-€30, 15-20 minutes). Car rentals are available at the airport.
Athens Eleftherios Venizelos Airport (ATH): Many visitors arrive at ATH then transfer to Santorini by plane or ferry. Flights Athens-Santorini take ~45 minutes; high-speed ferries from Piraeus to Athinios port take about 4.5-8 hours depending on the vessel (prices typically range €30-€80).
Train: There is no rail link to Santorini; the nearest mainland rail hub is Athens (Athens Larissa Station) if you are combining rail and sea travel to the islands.
Bus & Ferry: Ferries call at Athinios port; from Athinios a local public bus runs to Fira (about €2, 15-20 minutes). Inter-island and mainland routes are served by conventional ferries and high-speed catamarans from Piraeus and Rafina (travel times 4.5-8+ hours, prices vary by vessel type).
How to Get Around Fira#
Fira is best reached by plane (JTR) or ferry to Athinios and then a short bus or taxi ride into town. Once there, local buses and walking cover most needs; renting a vehicle is useful for exploring the island beyond Fira.
- Local buses (KTEL) (€1.80-€3) - The island bus network (KTEL) connects Fira with most villages, beaches and Athinios port. Buses are cheap and reliable in summer but can be crowded; schedules are denser in high season so check posted timetables at the Fira bus station in advance. Expect short waits and basic vehicles.
- Taxi (€20-€30) - Taxis are metered but limited on Santorini; expect flat-ish fares from the airport or port to Fira (typically €20-€30). In high season wait times for taxis can be long, so pre-book if you have an early/late arrival.
- Car / Scooter rental (€30-€80 per day (car)) - Renting a car or scooter is popular for exploring the island at your own pace. Expect higher prices in peak months and limited parking in Fira; book in advance for best rates and availability.
- Inter-island ferries (€30-€80+) - Ferry connections bring you to Athinios port from Piraeus, Rafina and other islands; high-speed catamarans cut crossing times but cost more. Ferries are the main alternative to flying and are seasonal-book in summer.
- Walking - The heart of Fira is compact and best explored on foot; narrow streets and caldera views mean you’ll do most sightseeing by walking. Expect cobbled lanes and stairs-good footwear helps.
