How to Get to Naxos (city)#
Naxos town (Chora) is served by the island’s small airport (JNX) and by frequent ferries from Athens (Piraeus/Rafina). Ferries are the most common and economical way to reach the island; once on Naxos the port and airport are close to town.
Naxos Airport (JNX): Naxos has a small domestic airport with flights from Athens (Eleftherios Venizelos) operated by carriers such as Aegean/Sky Express (seasonal schedules). The airport is a short drive from Naxos town (Chora); taxis or local buses take about 10-15 minutes to the port and central area.
Athens International Airport (ATH): Most visitors arrive via Athens and then take a ferry from Piraeus or Rafina to Naxos (see below) or catch a domestic flight to JNX. Ferries are the most common option and offer many daily departures in high season.
Train: No direct rail access to the Cyclades - Athens is the main mainland rail hub if combining with other travel.
Bus / Ferry: Ferries from Piraeus (Athens) or Rafina connect to Naxos port; operators include Blue Star Ferries and several high-speed services. Ferry times from Piraeus vary from about 3.5-5.5 hours for conventional ferries to faster high‑speed vessels (shorter times and higher fares). From the port you can take the local bus or a taxi into Naxos town (Chora).
How to Get Around Naxos (city)#
Ferries from Athens and short domestic flights to JNX are the primary ways to reach Naxos; once on the island, local buses, taxis or hired vehicles let you explore, while Chora itself is very walkable.
- Ferries (Piraeus/Rafina → Naxos) (€25-€70+) - Ferries are the main route from Athens; conventional ferries (Blue Star) carry vehicles and are slower but cheaper, while high-speed ferries are faster and more expensive. Book in advance in summer to secure preferred times.
- Flights to Naxos (JNX) (€40-€150+) - Domestic flights from Athens are quick (about 30-45 minutes) and convenient if available. They can be pricier than ferries and are subject to seasonal schedules.
- Local buses (KTEL Naxou) (€1.50-€4) - KTEL buses run between the port, airport and Chora and to beaches and villages across the island. Frequencies improve in summer; check the KTEL Naxou schedule for routes and times.
- Taxi (€3-€15) - Taxis are available at the port and airport for quick transfers into Chora or to hotels; expect queueing during peak arrival times in summer.
- Car / scooter hire (€20-€70/day) - Hiring a car or scooter is the best way to explore Naxos’ beaches and inland villages. Book in advance in high season and note narrow lanes in some villages.
- Walking - Naxos Chora is compact and best explored on foot - winding alleys, shops and tavernas are within easy walking distance from the port and central square.
