How to Get to Mykonos#
Mykonos is served by Mykonos Airport (JMK) for direct island flights and by ferries from Athens and other Cyclades islands. Once on the island, small buses, taxis and rental scooters/cars handle local travel-plan ahead in high season when demand spikes.
Mykonos Airport (JMK): Mykonos has a small international airport on the island. The airport is 3-4 km from Mykonos Town (Chora); a taxi to town takes about 10-15 minutes and typically costs €10-20. There is also a public bus (KTEL) that runs from the airport to Chora and to some beaches in high season for a low single-euro-digit fare.
Athens Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH): Many international flights come into Athens; from Athens you can reach Mykonos by ferry (from Piraeus or Rafina) or by a short connecting flight. Ferry crossings are 2.5-5+ hours depending on type (high-speed vs conventional) and cost from roughly €20-€60+; factor in transfer time from Athens Airport to the port (bus/taxi/train) which adds about 30-60 minutes.
Train: There are no train connections to Mykonos (island). The nearest mainland rail services run to Athens; beyond that you must use road plus ferry or fly.
Bus: Local KTEL buses operate on Mykonos island seasonally, linking Mykonos Airport, the new and old ports, Chora and several beaches. Fares are inexpensive (typically a couple of euros) and buses are busiest in summer; taxis and pre-booked transfers fill gaps at night or off-season.
How to Get Around Mykonos#
Mykonos travel centers on short airport transfers, ferries and seasonal local buses; taxis and rentals fill the gaps. For island-hopping or mainland connections, book ferries/planes in advance during summer.
- KTEL (local bus) (€2-€5) - Public buses connect the airport, town and major beach areas on a seasonal schedule; they’re cheap and often crowded during summer. Check current timetables because frequency drops sharply outside the high season.
- Taxi (€10-€25) - Taxis are convenient for door-to-door travel, luggage transfers and late-night trips when buses stop. There are limited numbers on the island so wait times can be long during peak hours; fares from the airport to Chora are typically around €10-20.
- Ferry (to/from mainland & islands) (€20-€80) - Ferries connect Mykonos with Piraeus/Rafina (Athens) and other Cyclades islands; high-speed catamarans are faster but cost more. Book in advance during summer and allow extra time for transfers to/from ports in Athens.
- Car / Scooter rental (€25+/day) - Renting a car, quad or scooter is popular for exploring beaches and inland spots on your own schedule. Vehicle availability and insurance requirements vary by season; reserve early in summer and drive carefully on narrow island roads.
- Private transfer / shuttle (€20-€50+) - Pre-booked transfers are useful if you arrive late or have lots of luggage and want a guaranteed ride to your hotel. Many hotels also offer paid pickups from port or airport during summer.
- Walking - Mykonos Town (Chora) is compact and best explored on foot - narrow lanes, shops and waterfront cafés are pedestrian-friendly. Expect cobbled streets and some steep sections.
