How to Get to Mykonos
Mykonos is served by Mykonos Airport (JMK) for direct island flights and by ferries from Athens and other Cyclades islands. Once on the island, small buses, taxis and rental scooters/cars handle local travel-plan ahead in high season when demand spikes.
Mykonos Airport (JMK): Mykonos has a small international airport on the island. The airport is 3-4 km from Mykonos Town (Chora); a taxi to town takes about 10-15 minutes and typically costs €10-20. There is also a public bus (KTEL) that runs from the airport to Chora and to some beaches in high season for a low single-euro-digit fare.
Athens Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH): Many international flights come into Athens; from Athens you can reach Mykonos by ferry (from Piraeus or Rafina) or by a short connecting flight. Ferry crossings are 2.5-5+ hours depending on type (high-speed vs conventional) and cost from roughly €20-€60+; factor in transfer time from Athens Airport to the port (bus/taxi/train) which adds about 30-60 minutes.
Train: There are no train connections to Mykonos (island). The nearest mainland rail services run to Athens; beyond that you must use road plus ferry or fly.
Bus: Local KTEL buses operate on Mykonos island seasonally, linking Mykonos Airport, the new and old ports, Chora and several beaches. Fares are inexpensive (typically a couple of euros) and buses are busiest in summer; taxis and pre-booked transfers fill gaps at night or off-season.
How to Get Around Mykonos #
Mykonos Town (Chora) is highly walkable - narrow lanes and most hotels, shops and cafés are reachable on foot. Buses run regularly from Chora to major beaches (Psarou, Paradise, Super Paradise) and cost only a few euros; expect higher demand and queues during July-August. Taxis are available but limited and can be expensive; many visitors rent scooters, ATVs or cars to move between beaches. Ferries connect to other Cyclades islands and Piraeus in the high season.
