El Tucuche

Mountain Second-highest mountain in Trinidad with rainforest summit

El Tucuche, Trinidad’s second‑highest peak, rises into cloud forest and ridgelines; hikers climb for panoramic views, birdwatching and encounters with montane flora.

Main image

El Tucuche is a mountain in the Northern Range of Trinidad and Tobago with an elevation of about 936 metres, making it the island’s second-highest peak.

The mountain is known for steep hiking routes and a distinctive twin-peaked profile; the summit area supports cloud-forest vegetation and offers wide views across northern Trinidad. Trails vary in difficulty and involve steep sections and some scrambling near the top.

El Tucuche is part of the geologic Northern Range that runs across northern Trinidad; it has long been a prominent landmark for local communities and hillwalkers. There are no major built structures on the peak.

The mountain sits in northern Trinidad, within the Northern Range, north-east of Port of Spain and close to the interior towns and villages that form the island’s northern foothills.

  • Summit conditions: Cloud forest and montane vegetation appear near the summit, so weather can be cool and wet even on otherwise warm days.
