Eger Castle sits on a volcanic hill above the town of Eger in Heves County, northern Hungary, and is best known for its 1552 defence against an Ottoman army. The medieval fortress comprises a keep, curtain walls and bastions that have been restored and house a regional museum.

The site includes exhibition spaces telling the story of the castle’s role in the 16th-century Ottoman wars, reconstructed defensive works and battlements that offer views over Eger and the surrounding vineyards. The museum is named after the 16th-century commander István Dobó and focuses on the siege and local military history.

The original fortifications date back to the Middle Ages with significant reinforcement and rebuilding in the 15th and 16th centuries in response to Ottoman expansion.

From Budapest, drive east on the M3 motorway and continue on Route 3 toward Eger; the drive is roughly 120-140 km and takes about 1.5-2 hours. Trains run from Budapest Keleti station to Eger (MÁV regional services); the rail journey is about 1.5-2 hours.

Eger Castle sits above the town centre: from Eger’s bus or train station it’s about a 15-25 minute uphill walk (roughly 1-1.5 km) to the castle; local taxis and short city buses also serve the central area.

• Arrive at opening to beat the coach groups that arrive mid-morning and walk the ramparts first-the defensive walls offer panoramic views of Eger and are often quieter than the central courtyards.
• Use the main approach from Dobó tér (the castle's town-side entrance) to access ticketing and the primary exhibitions; once inside, make a beeline for the bastions and galleries that many visitors rush past.
• Ask at the ticket office about any temporary exhibitions or living-history displays; weekend reenactments and special displays are common and can be missed if you stick only to the main keep.
