Why Visit Tokaj?#

Renowned worldwide for its wine, this small town is the heart of the Tokaj region where Tokaji Aszú and Furmint define the landscape. Limestone cellars carved into hillsides, centuries-old vineyards and tastings in traditional wine cellars make wine tourism the main draw. Beyond tasting rooms, seasonal harvest festivals and UNESCO-listed vineyard landscapes give cultural context to the bottles, appealing to oenophiles who want to pair history with a rare, sweet wine tradition.

How to Get to Tokaj#

Tokaj is well served by Hungary’s regional rail network and is easily reached from Budapest and Debrecen. Trains are the simplest public option for reaching Tokaj town; buses provide local connections within the wine region.

By Air

Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD): Budapest is the main international gateway for Tokaj (about 180 km). From BUD take rail or coach to Budapest Keleti or Nyugati station (city transfer ~30-40 min), then a direct regional train to Tokaj (travel time ~2.5-3 hours).

Debrecen Airport (DEB): Debrecen is closer (roughly 90-100 km). From DEB reach Debrecen city centre by shuttle/taxi (~20-30 min) and then take a regional train or bus to Tokaj (total journey ~1.5-2 hours).

By Train & Bus

Train: Tokaj has a railway station (Tokaj) on Hungarian regional lines connecting to Miskolc and Budapest (usually via Szerencs or Nyíregyháza). Trains from Budapest-Keleti to Tokaj take roughly 2.5-3 hours with direct regional options; fares are modest (buy at MÁV or online).

Bus: Regional buses supplement train services and connect Tokaj with nearby wine towns, Szerencs and Miskolc. Buses are useful for short hops around the Tokaj wine region and for reaching villages not served by train.

How to Get Around Tokaj#

Regional trains to Tokaj station are the most practical public option for most visitors; for winery-hopping and rural trips, rent a car or use local buses/taxis.

  • Regional train (MÁV) (HUF 1,500-4,000) - Tokaj station is on MÁV regional routes from Budapest, Miskolc and Nyíregyháza. Trains are economical and reliable; check MÁV for timetables and buy tickets at stations or via the MÁV app.
  • Regional bus (HUF 300-1,200) - Buses serve nearby villages and vineyards that trains do not reach. They are convenient for short distances within the Tokaj wine region and for connections to smaller towns.
  • Taxi / Local transfer (HUF 2,000-6,000 (short trips)) - Taxis are handy for door‑to‑door transfers between vineyards, hotels and the station - useful if you have luggage or are on a tasting tour. Agree fares in advance or use a meter.
  • Car / Rental (HUF 8,000-20,000/day (rental)) - Renting a car is the best way to explore the wider Tokaj wine region at your own pace. Roads are good and parking at wineries is generally available, making self‑driving very practical.
  • Bicycle (€-€) - Cycling is popular for visits to nearby vineyards - many wineries welcome cyclists and there are scenic rural routes. Expect some rolling hills and unpaved lanes on minor roads.
  • Walking - Tokaj town and the riverside tasting rooms are compact and best enjoyed on foot. Walking tours are a pleasant way to sample local wines and see the riverfront scenery.
