About Cathedral Basilica of Eger

The Cathedral Basilica of Eger is the principal Roman Catholic church in the city of Eger, Heves County, in northern Hungary, built in the 19th century in a neoclassical style. It serves as the seat of the local bishopric.

The basilica presents a large neoclassical façade, a spacious nave and formal interior decoration typical of its period. It functions as an active place of worship and a focal point in Eger’s historic centre.

Constructed in the 1800s to replace earlier ecclesiastical buildings, the present cathedral reflects 19th-century architectural and liturgical trends and was designed by noted architects of the era. It has served as the diocesan cathedral since its completion.

Situated in the centre of Eger, the cathedral stands within the city’s historic core in northern Hungary and is readily reached from the town’s principal squares and streets.
