Edifício Copan Building

Edifício Copan is a large residential and mixed-use building in central São Paulo, Brazil, designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer and completed in the 1960s. Its long, undulating concrete facade is one of the city’s most recognisable modernist landmarks.

The building contains more than a thousand apartments and substantial ground-floor commercial space, creating a high-density residential community within downtown São Paulo. The Copan’s continuous curve and internal circulation are characteristic features of Niemeyer’s approach to large-scale housing.

Construction took place in the mid 20th century as part of São Paulo’s urban modernisation; the building has remained a prominent address and a focal point for architectural tours. It occupies a central location along Avenida Ipiranga close to Praça da República and other central districts.

Edifício Copan sits in central São Paulo close to Praça da República. The easiest public-transit access is the São Paulo Metro: take Line 3 (Red) to República station and walk a few minutes (a few hundred metres) to the Copan building. From local airports use airport buses or a taxi to the city centre and then the metro/tram/bus to República.

• Visit in late afternoon for the best light on the building's sweeping curves and to watch daily life in the arcades when shops and cafés are active; be mindful this is still a residential building and respect residents' privacy when photographing.
• If you plan to photograph the façade, position yourself on Avenida Ipiranga and the nearby cross-streets to capture the Copan's full undulating profile rather than shooting from directly below.
