Dili & the North Coast (Dili, Baucau, Lospalos, Liquiça)
The northern coast settles into dryer, breezier weather by early May as the southeast trade winds start up; Dili and Baucau are warm but not oppressive, with daytime temperatures often in the high 20s. Ferry services re-establish regular schedules, making island trips and east-coast exploration much more reliable. Expect clearer skies for walking the Presidente Nicolau Lobato Boulevard and packing light cottons and a sun hat.
Atauro & Offshore Islands (Atauro, Jaco, small islets)
By May the southeast trade winds settle in, creating a reliably calm sea surface and crystal-clear diving conditions around Atauro; this is the start of the island’s best season for underwater visibility. Daytime temperatures are warm but tempered by breezes, making kayak trips and snorkeling comfortable. Small guesthouses fill modestly with foreign divers - book ahead for weekends and pack reef-safe sunscreen.
Central Highlands (Mount Ramelau/Tatamailau, Maubisse, Aileu, Ermera)
May is the start of the highland trekking season with drier days, cool mornings and comfortable daytime temperatures ideal for summiting Tatamailau. Coffee-processing activity in Ermera and Aileu picks up and roads are generally passable. Expect dusty rural tracks and bring layers for chilly nights (down to the low teens or cooler above 1,500 m) and sturdy shoes for rough trails.
South & Southwest Coast (Suai, Betano, Same, Same Plains)
May marks the start of the dry and windy season on the south coast, with the southeast trades bringing drier air and more predictable conditions; Suai and Betano become pleasant for exploration. Sea conditions calm relative to the wet months but remain windier than the north coast, making early-morning boat trips preferable. Expect improved road access and pack sun protection and a light wind layer for afternoons.
Oecusse Exclave (Pante Macassar, Tono River, surrounding enclave)
May ushers in the dry season with breezy, sunnier weather that makes boat trips and coastal walks reliable again; Pante Macassar becomes pleasantly accessible and inland roads firm up. Temperatures rise but are tempered by southeast winds; pack light layers for mornings and sunscreen for mid-day. This is a good window for visiting traditional villages and flatlands without the wet-season impediments.
