Dili & the North Coast (Dili, Baucau, Lospalos, Liquiça)
August remains dry and pleasantly windy; the sea is calm and clear around Dili and out toward the eastern reefs, so day trips to coastal villages and the lighthouse run smoothly. Busy local travel picks up a bit with domestic visitors, but international crowds are still small. Expect strong sun mid-day and coolish sea breezes, so sunscreen and a light scarf for wind protection are useful.
Atauro & Offshore Islands (Atauro, Jaco, small islets)
August keeps the dry, breezy conditions that make Atauro the most dependable island destination in Timor-Leste for diving and snorkeling. Water temperatures are warm and visibility is at its clearest; night dives are popular with operators. With few tourists otherwise in the country, Atauro can feel pleasantly busier - bring cash, as island services remain basic.
Central Highlands (Mount Ramelau/Tatamailau, Maubisse, Aileu, Ermera)
August keeps the dry, sunny pattern and offers excellent long-distance visibility from ridge lines, which makes this a favorite month for photographers and walkers. Night temperatures remain cool; some higher-altitude homestays may still use wood fires in evenings. This is a peak time for trekking logistics (guides, porters) to be most convenient and predictable.
South & Southwest Coast (Suai, Betano, Same, Same Plains)
August keeps the south coast dry and breezy with long, sunny days that are good for beach walks and coastal photography; the absence of rain makes back-road exploration much easier. Winds pick up in exposed headlands and beaches, so sheltered coves are preferable for swimming. Bring layered clothing for windy evenings and sun protection for the daytime heat.
Oecusse Exclave (Pante Macassar, Tono River, surrounding enclave)
August continues the dry, sunny pattern and is one of the most convenient months for visiting the enclave - activities like cycling across flatlands or exploring coastal tidal flats are straightforward. Expect strong sun and occasional winds; protective clothing and hydration are essential during long daytime excursions. Services are steady but still limited compared with Dili.
