Dili & the North Coast (Dili, Baucau, Lospalos, Liquiça)

December brings heavy, often tropical downpours back to the northern plain: Dili, Baucau and pockets around Lospalos will experience soggy periods and swollen streams. While heavy rain tends to fall in bursts, expect interruptions to road travel and occasional power cuts in remote areas; this is not the best month for island-hopping unless you have contingency time. Carry waterproof gear and plan to be patient with local transport.

Atauro & Offshore Islands (Atauro, Jaco, small islets)

December is firmly into the wet pattern: sustained rain and cloud cover mean fewer days suitable for diving or snorkeling, and ferry crossings can be canceled during storms. Atauro’s trails are often slippery, and basic services may be intermittent; however the island is extremely quiet and prices are at their lowest for those willing to accept rough weather. Bring robust waterproofs and flexible timing for any boat-based plans.

Central Highlands (Mount Ramelau/Tatamailau, Maubisse, Aileu, Ermera)

December in the uplands returns to persistent showers and fog, with cool, damp conditions common; rivers and waterfalls swell dramatically and many dirt roads are vulnerable to washouts. The landscape is lush and coffee farms are actively tending trees, but trekking requires experience of wet conditions and reliable local guides. Bring waterproof boots, a hooded rain shell and patience for weather-related delays.

South & Southwest Coast (Suai, Betano, Same, Same Plains)

December is wet and warm on the south coast with persistent rainfall, swollen waterways and an increased risk of localized flooding that can isolate communities like Same and Betano. The rainforest-fed rivers are at their fullest and some low-lying sites may be inaccessible; this is a low season for beach tourism, so only visit with local weather updates and prepared logistics.

Oecusse Exclave (Pante Macassar, Tono River, surrounding enclave)

December sees the wet season re-establish itself with frequent heavy rain and humid conditions in the enclave; Pante Macassar and nearby coastal areas can expect muddy tracks and limited day-trip options. Traveling inland often means negotiating wet, soft roads and possible delays - pack waterproof gear and be prepared for reduced schedules.
