Donskoy Monastery is a historic Russian Orthodox monastery located in the southern-central part of Moscow. It is known for its fortified walls, church buildings, and historic monastic grounds.

The compound contains principal church buildings and monastic structures set within defensive masonry walls and towers. Many visitors come to see the architectural ensemble and the cemetery and memorials located on the grounds.

The monastery was established in the late 16th century and developed through the 17th and 18th centuries, gaining additional buildings and fortifications in successive periods. Over time it has served religious, defensive and commemorative functions within the city.

The monastery sits within Moscow’s urban fabric, south-west of the Kremlin, in the Donskoy district of the city.

By car the monastery is a short drive (roughly 5-7 km) south of central Moscow (Red Square) via the Garden Ring/Sadovoe Koltso and local arterial streets.

• Aim for an early weekday visit to avoid the larger weekend crowds and to catch quieter moments during services; the monastery is easiest to reach from the Serpukhovskaya/Dobryninskaya metro area and the gates along Bolshaya Ordynka.
