Dong Hoi City
Coastal Vietnamese city and gateway to Phong Nha
Dong Hoi serves as Quang Binh's coastal hub; visitors use it for beaches, seafood and as the gateway to Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park's caves and karst landscapes.
Why Visit Dong Hoi?#
Located on Vietnam’s central coast, this gateway to Phong Nha-Ke Bang appeals to travelers who want caves and coast in one trip. Nearby Phong Nha and Paradise Caves offer enormous karst chambers, while Nhat Le Beach provides sandy relaxation after spelunking. The ruined Tam Tòa Church is a poignant wartime landmark, and lively seafood stalls and markets give a clear taste of Quảng Bình province. Its compact size makes it easy to pair natural wonder with local life.

How to Get to Dong Hoi#
Dong Hoi is served by Dong Hoi Airport (VDH) and by the Đồng Hới Railway Station on Vietnam’s Reunification line. The city is compact; taxis, motorbike taxis and shuttle vans to Phong Nha are the usual ways to arrive and move around.
Dong Hoi Airport (VDH): Dong Hoi Airport (also called Quang Binh Airport) handles domestic flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Taxis from the airport to Dong Hoi city centre take about 10-20 minutes; expect fares around VND 120,000-250,000 depending on the car type. Motorbike taxis (xe ôm) are cheaper (VND 50,000-100,000) if you’re traveling light.
Train: Đồng Hới Railway Station (Ga Đồng Hới) is on Vietnam’s North-South (Reunification) line. Trains from Hanoi take around 8-10 hours and from Hue 2-3 hours; ticket prices vary by class (hard seats/soft sleepers) - plan on a wide range (roughly VND 100,000-600,000+) depending on class and distance.
Bus / Shuttle: The Đồng Hới bus station and private shuttle vans provide frequent connections to nearby attractions such as Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng (45-90 minutes). Shared minivans to Phong Nha run around VND 70,000-150,000 and take about 1-1.5 hours; local buses and motorbike taxis cover shorter distances inside the city.
How to Get Around Dong Hoi#
Dong Hoi is compact and easy to navigate by taxi or motorbike taxi; trains serve longer coastal journeys and shuttle vans connect to Phong Nha. For flexibility and reaching caves or beaches, hire a car or use scheduled shuttles.
- Taxis / Private car (VND 120k-300k) - Taxis are the most reliable way to get from the airport or station to hotels and attractions. Airport-to-city fares are typically VND 120,000-250,000 (10-20 minutes). For day trips to Phong Nha or the coast, hire a private car for the flexibility.
- Motorbike taxi (xe ôm) (VND 50k-100k) - Xe ôm are cheap and quick for single passengers and short hops inside town - fares often VND 50,000-100,000 depending on distance. Good for light luggage and urgent transfers but less comfortable for long rides.
- Train (Reunification Express) (VND 100k-600k+) - The Reunification Express stops at Đồng Hới and is a comfortable option for longer-distance travel along Vietnam’s coast. Travel times are long (e.g., Hanoi ~8-10 hours); book bunks or soft seats in advance for overnight journeys. Ticket costs vary widely by class and distance.
- Shuttle / Intercity bus (VND 70k-150k) - Shared minivans and shuttle buses link Đồng Hới with Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng and provincial towns; fares to Phong Nha are commonly VND 70,000-150,000 (≈1-1.5 hours). These are frequent and convenient for visitors heading to cave areas.
- Bicycle (VND 20k-100k) - Bicycles are a pleasant way to explore the flat parts of Đồng Hới and nearby coastal roads if you have the time - rentals are inexpensive and give good local access. Use them for short sightseeing rides rather than long intercity legs.
- Walking - Đồng Hới’s centre is walkable and compact; strolling the riverside and market areas is often the quickest way to get around short distances.
