How to Get to Đông Hà#
Đông Hà is served by the Đông Hà railway station on Vietnam’s North-South line and is within driving distance of several regional airports (Phu Bai/Hue, Dong Hoi and Da Nang). Trains and intercity buses are the practical ways to arrive; larger airports at Da Nang and Hue give the most flight options.
Phu Bai International Airport (HUI): Phu Bai (Hue) is the closest full-service airport to Đông Hà (around 60-80 km depending on route). From HUI you can catch a public bus or a shuttle minibus to Hue city centre and then take an intercity bus or train to Đông Hà; expect total travel time of about 1.5-2.5 hours. Taxis from the airport to Đông Hà typically take ~1.5-2 hours and cost roughly 800,000-1,200,000 VND (approx. 35-50 USD).
Dong Hoi Airport (VDH): Dong Hoi is another nearby option (roughly 90-120 km south of Đông Hà). From Dong Hoi there are scheduled buses and private shuttles to Đông Hà; bus travel time is about 2-3 hours and fares are typically in the 80,000-200,000 VND range (approx. 3.5-9 USD). Taxis or private cars are quicker but considerably more expensive (several hundred thousand VND).
Da Nang International Airport (DAD): Da Nang is the largest airport in central Vietnam and is used when there are more flight choices. Bus or shuttle services run from Da Nang to Đông Hà (travel time ~2.5-4 hours depending on traffic); intercity bus fares are generally 120,000-250,000 VND (approx. 5-11 USD). Private transfers will be faster but cost more.
Train: Đông Hà has its own station on Vietnam’s North-South (Reunification) Railway - Đông Hà Railway Station. Regular SE/SE1-SE24 and TN/Tau Noi routes stop here; travel times from Hue are about 45-90 minutes and from Da Nang about 2-3 hours. Ticket prices vary by train and class (soft seat/berth vs. hard seat) - short intercity fares are typically modest (tens of thousands of VND for the cheapest seats; higher for sleepers).
Bus: Interprovincial buses connect Đông Hà with Hue, Dong Hoi, Quang Tri province towns and Da Nang. Travel times align with distance (Hue ~1-2 hours; Dong Hoi ~2-3 hours). Fares are generally 70,000-250,000 VND depending on operator and comfort level. Local minibuses and scheduled coaches depart from the main bus station in Đông Hà.
How to Get Around Đông Hà#
Getting around Đông Hà is easiest by short taxi or motorbike rides for local trips and by train or intercity coach for arrival/departure. For comfort on longer journeys choose the train; for flexibility within the town use xe ôm or a rented scooter.
- Train (Reunification Railway) (from ~40,000 VND) - Trains are the most comfortable intercity option to reach and leave Đông Hà - the station is on the main north-south line. Choose daytime SE trains for seats or night trains for berths on longer legs. Book tickets in advance for weekends; platforms and basic facilities are at the station but expect limited services compared with big-city stations.
- Intercity bus / Coach (70,000-250,000 VND) - Multiple private coach operators run between Đông Hà and Hue, Dong Hoi and Da Nang. Buses drop at the main bus terminal; some companies offer direct airport shuttles. Coaches are budget-friendly and frequent; evening services can fill up so reserve on busy travel days.
- Taxi / Private car (300,000-1,200,000 VND) - Taxis and private transfers are convenient for door-to-door journeys from airports or nearby cities. They are faster than buses but noticeably more expensive - negotiate or confirm a meter/fixed fare before departure. For groups, splitting a private car can be cost-effective.
- Motorbike taxi (Xe ôm) (10,000-50,000 VND) - Xe ôm are useful for short hops around town and reach places buses don’t. Use local apps where available or agree a price before starting. They are cheap and quick but not ideal for luggage or bad weather.
- Bicycle / Scooter rental (50,000-200,000 VND/day) - Many guesthouses and shops rent bicycles and motor scooters - a good option to explore the town and nearby sites at your own pace. Check the vehicle condition and have a valid license if required; helmets are recommended. Fuel and parking are inexpensive.
- Walking - Đông Hà is compact enough to explore on foot in many parts - walking is the best way to sample markets, cafés and the riverfront. Sidewalks can be uneven; keep an eye on traffic and motorbikes.
