Roseau & Southwest Coast (Roseau, Mero, Scotts Head, Champagne Reef)

Blue, cool mornings are common in January on the leeward side; Roseau enjoys sunbreaks and pleasantly warm days around 26-28°C while the trade winds keep humidity bearable. Cruise ships are frequent, especially mid-month, so the waterfront and Botanical Gardens can feel busy but the snorkeling at Champagne Reef and the calm beaches at Mero are excellent. Pack a light rain jacket for brief tropical showers that still pop up, and expect good visibility for diving and coastal walks.

North Coast & Cabrits Peninsula (Portsmouth, Cabrits National Park, Calibishie)

Clear, trade-washed mornings in January make Portsmouth and Calibishie especially pleasant for sea kayaking and exploring the colonial ruins at Cabrits National Park. Cooler nights are typical relative to the lowland south, and the sea is usually calm enough for boat trips into Prince Rupert Bay. Expect more isolated beaches and fewer crowds than Roseau, but still bring a light windbreaker for the steady northeasterly breeze.

East / Atlantic Coast (Castle Bruce, La Plaine, Marigot, Grand Fond)

January mornings on the Atlantic side are often grey and misty despite being officially in the dry season; the coastline feels windier and cooler than Roseau, with frequent cloud cover that keeps temperatures in the mid-20s°C. Surf can be strong and longshore currents are a real concern on unsheltered beaches, so swimming is best avoided except at guarded spots. The region is lush at this time and great for photography of dramatic waves meeting rainforest cliffs.

Central Highlands & Morne Trois Pitons National Park (Boiling Lake, Emerald Pool, Trafalgar Falls, Waitukubuli Trail high sections)

Mornings at higher elevations are cool in January, with temperatures often in the mid-teens Celsius and persistent mist that can hang over trails like the one to Boiling Lake. The air feels fresh and damp; many hikers relish the clearer windows for the long, steep walks out of Freshwater Lake and Laudat, but pack a warm layer and a waterproof outer shell. Trails are generally firmer after the drier months, making this a prime season for the classic hikes.

Southern Peninsula & Soufrière Area (Soufrière, Scotts Head peninsula, Grand Bay)

January mornings on the southern peninsula are typically warm and pleasantly breezy, with the sheltered bay near Scotts Head offering calm water for snorkeling at Champagne Reef. Soufrière’s sulfur springs are steamy but accessible in these drier weeks, and whale-watching tours often find good sightings from January through early spring. Expect fewer crowds than Roseau but book dive trips ahead of time during holiday weekends.
