October is squarely in the second rainy season: downpours are common and rivers are very full, often disrupting unpaved road travel and isolating smaller settlements. Mbandaka’s waterfront communities contend with higher water and some temporary relocations of riverside markets; conservation safaris rely heavily on boat transfers. For visitors, patience and waterproofing are essential - pack quick-dry clothing, and accept that forest paths may be out of use.
Goma, Bukavu, Lake Kivu, Virunga, Kahuzi-Biéga
October typically falls into the second rainy pulse with regular, sometimes heavy showers in the afternoon and evening. The Virunga slopes and Kahuzi-Biéga forests become very green and atmospheric, but crater rim trails can close or be slippery; volcanic hikes in damp conditions require experienced guides and good boots. Boat operators on Lake Kivu may reduce services during storms, so allow extra time for transfers.
Bunia, Dungu, Garamba
October sees the second heavier rain period arriving, with more consistent precipitation through the month and rising rivers around Dungu and the Ituri zone. Some park roads become impassable without a high-clearance vehicle, and boat-based approaches may be preferred for certain reserves. Lubumbashi, Kolwezi, Lake Mweru
