Lower Congo & Kinshasa (Western Lowlands)

Heavy cloud build-up and regular thunderstorms become common in October as the rain season re-establishes itself. Streets that had dried will start to soften; expect sudden downpours that can turn traffic to a crawl and produce urban flooding in poorly drained quarters of Kinshasa. City-based visitors should plan slower arrival times and bring rainproof clothing; avoid trying to reach remote villages that may already be slippery and difficult.

Congo Basin Rainforest (Central & Northern Basin - Mbandaka, Kisangani, Equateur)

October is squarely in the second rainy season: downpours are common and rivers are very full, often disrupting unpaved road travel and isolating smaller settlements. Mbandaka’s waterfront communities contend with higher water and some temporary relocations of riverside markets; conservation safaris rely heavily on boat transfers.
