Lower Congo & Kinshasa (Western Lowlands)

Late February keeps the long wet season in place across the western lowlands. Heavy tropical thunderstorms often arrive suddenly and clear to very humid, shimmering heat; Matadi’s coastal roads can be slick and Kinshasa’s unpaved neighborhoods may develop temporary potholes and quagmires. If you plan river travel, allow extra time: launches can be delayed by wind or high water, and daytime humidity means breathable clothing and insect repellent are essential.

Congo Basin Rainforest (Central & Northern Basin - Mbandaka, Kisangani, Equateur)

February commonly remains part of the short dry spell in the central basin; rivers are navigable and the forest canopy looks freshly green after the previous season. Small-boat travel on the Congo’s tributaries becomes simpler, which is helpful if you’re arranging river transfers to remote lodges or research stations. Expect hot, muggy afternoons and bring good mosquito protection and waterproofs in case an unexpected shower arrives.

Eastern Highlands & Great Lakes (Goma, Bukavu, Lake Kivu, Virunga, Kahuzi-Biéga)

February tends to be another relatively dry, pleasant month in the highlands - days are warm in the sun while nights remain cool. Visibility across Lake Kivu and the eastern rift is usually good, making this a desirable time for boat trips and village visits around Bukavu, and for arranging responsible treks in the Virunga foothills. Do bring a warm fleece for summit attempts or early starts on crater hikes, and confirm guides are available for mountain routes.

Ituri & Northeastern Savannas (Bunia, Dungu, Garamba)

February often becomes hotter and drier, with dusty tracks between Bunia, Dungu and park gates. Wildlife congregates around remaining waterholes in Garamba, improving sightings, and local markets hum with activity before the rains return. Travelers should pack light but protective clothing, sunglasses and stay well hydrated: the dry conditions can be unforgiving for long overland drives.

Southern Plateau & Katanga (Lubumbashi, Kolwezi, Lake Mweru)

February continues hot and wet, with heavy convective storms common in the afternoons and evenings across the Katanga plateau. Surface water pools on roads and rural tracks can impede access to remote sites, though towns remain busy and vibrant. If you must travel, plan shorter hops between towns, carry rainproof clothing, and expect intermittent power or transport delays in the countryside.
