Lower Congo & Kinshasa (Western Lowlands)
June marks the main dry season here and the air becomes noticeably less humid; Kinshasa warms during the day but evenings are more pleasant. River levels begin to fall, improving visibility on the water and making some riverfront paths easier to walk; Matadi’s beaches and seaside roads dry out. This is one of the better months for moving between towns and for city-based visits - bring light layers for cooler nights and expect clearer skies.
Congo Basin Rainforest (Central & Northern Basin - Mbandaka, Kisangani, Equateur)
A drier interlude typically comes in June, reopening trails and making ground travel to research stations and forest camps easier. River levels drop enough in places to reveal sandbars and small islands, improving chances for walking safaris near river margins and for fishing trips. Temperatures feel a touch cooler under the closed canopy, and this is one of the friendlier periods for multi-day inland travel - still pack insect repellent and fast-drying clothes.
Eastern Highlands & Great Lakes (Goma, Bukavu, Lake Kivu, Virunga, Kahuzi-Biéga)
June brings a drier, cooler stretch that many consider the best time for trekking the highlands - mornings are crisp, trails firm up, and volcanic vistas clear. Night temperatures can dip markedly, so pack warm layers and a hat for summit nights; guides are more readily available and crater permits are easier to schedule. This is prime season for sustained hiking, wildlife spotting in Kahuzi-Biéga, and calmer crossings on Lake Kivu.
Ituri & Northeastern Savannas (Bunia, Dungu, Garamba)
June usually offers a short drier break, making interior travel a little easier and opening more track options for safaris and community visits. Mornings are pleasantly cool and ideal for early wildlife observation, but days warm up substantially; dusty roads begin hardening. For travelers this is a practical window to explore Garamba’s savannas and the forest margins with fewer logistical headaches than in full wet months.
Southern Plateau & Katanga (Lubumbashi, Kolwezi, Lake Mweru)
June can be quite dry and pleasantly cool across Katanga, with lower humidity and crisp mornings that may require a light jacket. Daytime temperatures are comfortable for outdoor activities and vehicle access to countryside lodges is usually reliable. This is one of the best months for extended exploration of the southern plateau, though sun protection and water are still important on daytime excursions.
