How to Get to Cyangugu
Cyangugu (Rusizi) can be reached by a short domestic flight into Kamembe Airport (KME) when flights are available, but the most common option is a road trip from Kigali (KGL). The journey by bus or car is lengthy-plan for a multi-hour drive.
Kigali International Airport (KGL): For Cyangugu (now commonly called Rusizi), Kigali International Airport is the main international gateway; from KGL you travel by road or take a domestic flight to Kamembe (when scheduled). Taxis to Kigali centre take about 15-25 minutes and cost around 6,000-12,000 RWF (approx. US$6-12). Kamembe Airport (KME): Kamembe (KME) serves the Rusizi/Cyangugu area with occasional domestic flights from Kigali. When flights operate the flight time is short (around 30-45 minutes) and from Kamembe to Rusizi town centre it’s a 5-15 minute taxi ride; taxi fares are modest-expect small local tariffs (pay and confirm locally).
Train: Rwanda currently has no passenger rail services.
Bus: Regular buses and shared minibuses run between Kigali (Nyabugogo) and Cyangugu/Rusizi. This is a long road trip-expect roughly 5-6 hours depending on stops and traffic. Fares for long-distance coaches vary, typically several thousand RWF (often 4,000-8,000 RWF ≈US$4-8) depending on service level.
How to Get Around Cyangugu #
Cyangugu (Rusizi) has a compact centre that’s walkable for short trips, especially along the lakeshore. Motorcycle taxis and minibuses are the usual ways to travel locally and to cross to nearby settlements. If you plan cross-border travel toward Bukavu, check schedules and bring documentation; road and weather conditions affect journey times.
