Western Cuba (Havana, Pinar del Río & Viñales)
September is one of the riskiest months for tropical storms and hurricanes - watch advisories closely if you’re booking flights to Havana or boat trips to the northern cays. When it’s calm, the rain is heavy and frequent, turning rural tracks in Pinar del Río slippery; urban flooding in Havana during intense downpours is possible. Many travelers avoid this month, though last-minute deals can be found if you accept the weather risk.
Central Cuba (Trinidad, Cienfuegos, Santa Clara & Escambray)
September is commonly the wettest month for Central Cuba and also the most likely to produce hurricane impacts; heavy, prolonged rain can inundate low roads and delay travel between Trinidad and the Escambray. If conditions are calm you’ll still encounter dramatic cloudscapes and swelled rivers ideal for photography but risky for swimming. Many travellers avoid the month, preferring October-November when conditions begin to settle.
Camagüey & Northern Cays (Camagüey, Jardines del Rey, Cayo Coco)
September is the climatological peak of hurricane season; heavy rains, rough seas and cancelled flights are realistic risks for both the mainland and the northern cays. If the weather is benign you’ll encounter fewer tourists and good deals, but understand that plans can change with little notice. Local staff on the cays are experienced at contingency plans; still, carry basic supplies and keep flexible arrangements.
Eastern Lowlands (Santiago de Cuba, Baracoa & Guantánamo Bay)
September is frequently the wettest and most hurricane-prone month for eastern Cuba, with long episodes of rain and strong winds possible - monitor forecasts closely. When conditions permit, the countryside is spectacularly green and waterfalls are full, but low-lying areas can flood easily. Many international visitors avoid this month; if you travel, expect interruptions to ferries and regional flights.
Sierra Maestra & Eastern Highlands (Pico Turquino, Sierra Cristal)
September often delivers the heaviest rains and the greatest chance of hurricane impacts; landslips and washed-out trails are a real hazard and some rural communities can be temporarily cut off. For safety, avoid remote mountain trekking during significant storm warnings; instead choose lowland excursions or cultural visits in towns that have better sheltering options. Photo opportunities are dramatic after storms, but access is the limiting factor.
