Western Cuba (Havana, Pinar del Río & Viñales)

March sees the sun intensifying and the landscape around Vinales starting to green after the dry season; daytime highs often reach the high 20s°C. The city feels lively - construction and cultural events pick up - and it’s a good window for coastal drives to Playa Santa María without heavy rains. Expect occasional Saharan-dust haze some springs, so if you’re photographing the mogotes or old cars in Havana, be prepared for softer light on hazy days.

Central Cuba (Trinidad, Cienfuegos, Santa Clara & Escambray)

March feels warmer and drier; sugarcane fields around Santa Clara look parched by the end of the month and temperatures commonly reach high 20s°C. It’s an excellent time for colonial architecture tours and beach days on the southern coast before the rains start. The Carnaval atmosphere in smaller towns can begin to pick up, so check local calendars if you’d like to time a festival visit.

Camagüey & Northern Cays (Camagüey, Jardines del Rey, Cayo Coco)

By March the air is warming but still markedly drier than summer; the cays’ turquoise water is inviting and visibility for snorkelling improves as sediment settles after winter squalls. Camagüey’s historic quarter is lively with local festivals and easier walking conditions than in hotter months. Bring sun protection and a light layer for evenings inland and expect birdlife to be active in the wetlands around the northern keys.

Eastern Lowlands (Santiago de Cuba, Baracoa & Guantánamo Bay)

March warms up noticeably and the lush tropical vegetation around Baracoa looks vibrant after the dry season; coastal temperatures commonly reach high 20s°C. This is an excellent time for boat trips and hiking short rainforest trails before rains return. Expect more insects than in winter months, so bring repellent and lightweight long sleeves for sunset walks.

Sierra Maestra & Eastern Highlands (Pico Turquino, Sierra Cristal)

March sees a mild rise in daytime temperatures but mountain nights remain chilly; wildflowers and early spring growth can be seen on lower ridges. Water sources from winter recharge still flow well, so campsite water is usually available along established routes. Plan for sunny days and pack layers for quickly changing conditions near tree line on Pico Turquino.
