Western Cuba (Havana, Pinar del Río & Viñales)
Late-winter days bring bright sun and pleasantly warm afternoons across Pinar del Río province, often topping 25-27°C in Havana while valleys like Viñales are dry and dusty. This is an excellent month for touring tobacco farms and caves (Cueva del Indio) before the genuine heat and rains arrive. Bring sunscreen and a hat; evenings stay mild and outdoor nightlife around Plaza Vieja is lively without the humidity of summer.
Central Cuba (Trinidad, Cienfuegos, Santa Clara & Escambray)
By late winter, February is typically dry and mild across central Cuba, with bright skies that make the pastel façades of Trinidad pop. The Escambray massif often has the clearest visibility of the year, great for panoramic views of waterfalls and coffee plantations. Bring layers for early-morning fog in the hills and expect lively weekend crowds at Playa Ancón as locals travel from Cienfuegos and Santa Clara.
Camagüey & Northern Cays (Camagüey, Jardines del Rey, Cayo Coco)
February remains dry and comfortable across the central-north region; inland Camagüey sees clear days and cool evenings while the cays enjoy steady trade-wind breezes. This is a peak time for international visitors, so expect busy resort piers and reserved dive charters; flight and hotel bookings should be made early. The sea is generally calm, excellent for snorkelling around coral heads when winds are light.
Eastern Lowlands (Santiago de Cuba, Baracoa & Guantánamo Bay)
By February the eastern lowlands feel very pleasant for wandering San Juan Hill or strolling Baracoa’s seaside promenades, with clear visibility and comfortable warmth. The area is perfect for sampling local cuisine outdoors and watching live music without the heavy summer downpours. If you’re heading to Guantánamo Bay (the city, not the base), bring sun protection and a light jacket for harbor breezes.
Sierra Maestra & Eastern Highlands (Pico Turquino, Sierra Cristal)
By February the highland air is cool and clear; trekking conditions are excellent with minimal rainfall and firm footpaths through cloud-forest zones. Local villages offer basic but hospitable lodging, and the lack of heavy rains makes supply logistics reliable for guided expeditions. Bring thermals or a fleece for pre-dawn starts and summit attempts - temperatures will feel markedly cooler than in the coastal lowlands.
