Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary

Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected wetland area in Belize District that conserves lagoon, marsh and seasonally flooded habitats. It is recognised locally as one of Belize’s important bird areas.

The area was set aside for protection to conserve wetland habitats and the species they support, particularly migratory and resident waterbirds. Conservation measures have focused on maintaining the lagoon and surrounding floodplain ecology.

It sits close to the village of Crooked Tree in Belize District, inland from the Belize Barrier Reef and to the north of Belize City. The sanctuary is accessed from local roads and by boat on the lagoon.

• Birdwatching: The sanctuary is a key birdwatching area notable for waterbirds and migratory species, with regular sightings of large wading birds and raptors.
• Access: Access is commonly via the nearby village of Crooked Tree and by small boat to reach lagoon-side viewpoints and trails.
