Lamanai at a Glance#
About Lamanai#
Lamanai is a major Maya archaeological site in northern Belize known for long-term occupation and large ceremonial architecture set along waterways. The site’s name means “submerged crocodile” in Yucatec Maya and its location on the New River Lagoon made it an important riverside center.
Key monuments include the High Temple and several mask- or jaguar-adorned temple facades that dominate the site’s skyline. Visitors commonly arrive by boat on the New River and explore the main plazas, temples and a ballcourt area set amid dense forest.
Archaeological evidence indicates Lamanai was occupied from the Preclassic period through the Postclassic, making it one of the region’s longest-occupied Maya centers. Excavations have revealed ritual architecture, stucco masks and a complex sequence of construction phases that reflect long-term civic and ceremonial importance.
The ruins are in the Orange Walk District of northern Belize, situated beside the New River Lagoon and reachable by guided boat trips from nearby communities.
- Boat access: Most visitor access is by boat along the New River, which remains the common route to reach the site from nearby ports.
What to See#
- High Temple: The High Temple and platform complexes offering panoramic views over the site and nearby waterways.
- Mask & Jaguar temples: The Jaguar/Mask temples that feature large stucco masks and sculptural decoration typical of the site’s monumental architecture.
