Crocodilopolis is the classical (Greek) name used in antiquity for the ancient Egyptian city known in Egyptian as Shedet, located in the Faiyum Oasis. The city was a principal cult centre for the crocodile god Sobek and hosted temples and rituals associated with that deity.
During the Ptolemaic period the settlement was renamed Arsinoë by the Ptolemaic rulers and remained an important regional centre through Hellenistic and Roman times. Archaeological remains in the broader Faiyum region reflect long-term occupation from the Pharaonic through Hellenistic periods.
The site lies within the modern Faiyum Governorate, on the fertile floor of the Faiyum Oasis west of the Nile, and is part of a wider landscape of ancient agricultural and religious settlements that supported the region’s economy and cult life.
