How to Get to Cres#
Cres is an Adriatic island reached via short car ferries from the Istrian and Kvarner coasts. Rijeka (RJK) is the nearest airport; Pula (PUY) is a secondary option - from either you combine a road transfer with a Jadrolinija ferry to reach Cres.
Rijeka Airport (RJK): Rijeka is the closest airport on the northern Adriatic. From RJK you typically drive or take a taxi toward the Istrian mainland and then proceed to a ferry port (Valbiska on Krk or Brestova on the Istrian side) to reach Cres; total door-to-door time to Cres town is commonly 1-2 hours depending on the chosen ferry route and connection, and taxis/transfers from the airport to ferry ports are priced roughly €40-€80 depending on distance and luggage.
Pula Airport (PUY): Pula is another practical option, especially outside Rijeka’s seasonal schedule. From Pula you drive north to the Brestova ferry (or drive around by road and ferry combinations); depending on the connection this journey takes roughly 1.5-3 hours door-to-door. Renting a car at either airport is recommended for island access and flexibility.
Train: Mainland rail service does not reach the island of Cres; the closest mainline stations are in Rijeka and other Istrian towns. From Rijeka’s main railway station (Rijeka Glavni kolodvor) you’ll need a bus or taxi to a ferry port (Brestova or Valbiska) to continue to Cres.
Bus & Ferry: Intercity buses run to Rijeka or to ferry ports; from Rijeka bus station you can catch regional buses toward Porozina/Merag (Cres) or Valbiska (Krk) where Jadrolinija car and passenger ferries operate. Typical regional bus fares are in the range of 30-80 HRK and ferry foot-passenger fares across short crossings (Brestova-Porozina or Valbiska-Merag) are commonly around 20-40 HRK; ferry crossings are short (roughly 20-40 minutes) but schedules vary seasonally so check timetables and book vehicle space in summer.
How to Get Around Cres#
Best way around Cres is to combine a rental car or taxi with the short ferries; public buses are fine for inter-village travel but run less often off-season. If you prefer no driving, plan connections carefully and allow extra time for ferry links.
- Car + ferry (€5-€40 (ferry & short transfer)) - Driving and taking the short Jadrolinija ferries (Valbiska-Merag or Brestova-Porozina) is the most flexible option for reaching Cres. Ferries carry foot passengers and vehicles; in summer book vehicle space in advance. Expect total travel times from Rijeka Airport to Cres town of about 1-2 hours depending on connections.
- Intercity bus (30-80 HRK) - Buses run from Rijeka and other Istrian towns to ferry ports and to Cres (seasonal service levels vary). Buses are economical and commonly timed to meet ferries in high season; carry small luggage and expect journey times of 1-2 hours from Rijeka depending on the route.
- Taxi / transfer (€40-€90 per transfer (approx.)) - Taxis or private transfers from Rijeka or Pula provide door-to-door service to ferry ports and are practical if you have lots of luggage or arrive outside bus hours. Prices depend on distance and number of passengers; transfers cost substantially more than buses but save time and connections.
- Local buses on Cres (~HRK 10-40 per trip) - Once on Cres, local buses connect Cres town with other island settlements; frequency is highest in summer and much reduced in winter. Check local timetables (routes are short) and keep cash for tickets on board if needed.
