Ivory Coast in October: Weather, Crowds & What to Expect

Coast & Abidjan (Lagoon and Gulf shore)

December brings the return of the Harmattan to the coast: clear, dry air and fine dust that gives the sea and lagoon long, sharp horizons and cooler nights. Beachside promenades and evening bars in Marcory and Zone 4 feel comfortable after sunset; day temperatures are warm but less oppressive than in the wet season. Pack sunglasses, a breathable scarf for dusty mornings, and be prepared for occasional very hazy sunrises caused by dust blown off the Sahel.

South Rainforest & San‑Pédro-Taï area

December brings clearer skies and drier air rolling in from the north with the Harmattan influence felt at times, especially earlier in the month; nights are noticeably fresher for coastal forest lodges. Days are comfortable for long hikes near Taï and the national parks, and local fishing communities bustle with end-of-year markets. Lightweight layers for cooler evenings and protection against dust on dusty dirt roads will make travel more comfortable.

West Highlands (Man, Tonkoui & La Dent)

December’s cool, dry days and crisp mountain air make the highlands very attractive for outdoor activity, with sunrise views over the peaks often unobstructed and nights that can be chilly. Local guesthouses welcome winter visitors and trails are generally stable, so it’s prime trekking season; bring a warm jacket for pre-dawn starts and expect clear stargazing when clouds are absent. Road links to lower towns are reliable and dust is minimal.

Central Plateau (Yamoussoukro, Bouaké)

December is dry and cool with crisp mornings and pleasant daytime heat - one of the best months for touring central Ivory Coast’s monuments and coffee-country roads. The risk of road disruptions is low and inter-city travel is straightforward on paved roads; nights can be chilly outside urban centers, so bring a warm sweater. Expect clearer air and improved visibility for landscape views and sunrise shots.

North & Savannah (Korhogo, Ferkessédougou)

December brings pronounced Harmattan dust and cool mornings with sharp, dry air that makes the north feel much cooler than the coast at the same time of year. Daytime warmth is comfortable but the dusty air can affect breathing and visibility for long-distance photos; a scarf and eye protection help. This is a prime month for cultural travel and for visiting rock formations and markets before the intense heat of spring.
