Coast & Abidjan (Lagoon and Gulf shore)

May through July brings the heaviest rains on the coast, with persistent cloud cover, intense afternoon storms and swollen lagoons around Grand‑Bassam and Assinie. Many coastal trails and mangrove boardwalks become muddy and some smaller boat services are canceled on stormy days, but the rivers and waterfalls inland are at their fullest and cocoa trucks are active at the ports. Daytime temperatures stay warm (mid to high 20s°C) but the relentless humidity makes air-conditioned hotels more desirable; expect fewer international crowds.

South Rainforest & San‑Pédro-Taï area

May through July is the region’s wettest period: daily heavy rains, near-constant humidity and a thick, enveloping canopy of mist and cloud in places like Taï National Park. Many lodges close some trails due to saturated soils and the risk of falling branches; wildlife viewing is harder visually but streams and waterfalls are spectacular. Bring durable rain gear, quick-dry clothing and accept that some long cross-country transfers may be delayed by flooded tracks.

West Highlands (Man, Tonkoui & La Dent)

May-July is the wettest window for the highlands - persistent cloud, heavy showers and saturated trails are normal, though the elevation keeps temperatures lower than the coast. The higher rainfall nurtures terraced farms and sprays spectacular cascades, but some mountain paths and secondary roads become temporarily impassable. Travelers should expect fewer services in remote villages and bring full rainproof gear plus reliable local transport arranged in advance.

Central Plateau (Yamoussoukro, Bouaké)

May through July brings regular heavy rainfall across the central plateau, with persistent humidity and very green, fertile landscapes best seen from the roads when dry spells appear. Crop activity peaks and local markets are lively, but some tourist sites are harder to reach due to muddy feeder roads. If you’re driving, a high-clearance vehicle helps; otherwise focus on the main paved routes and indoor cultural sites.

North & Savannah (Korhogo, Ferkessédougou)

May through September constitutes the single rainy season in the north: consistent afternoon storms, dramatic thunderstorms, and marked cooling of daytime temperatures relative to the dry months. Rural tracks become soft and sometimes impassable during peak storms but the savannah turns verdant and waterfalls in the far north swell; malaria risk increases with standing water so use repellents and netting. Plan extra time for transfers, and consider 4x4 transport for remote visits.
