Chiang Mai Walking Street

Chiang Mai Walking Street refers to the weekly night-market events held in Chiang Mai’s Old City, most famously the Sunday Walking Street along Ratchadamnoen Road. The market is a regular urban event featuring crafts, street food and street performances concentrated on specific evenings.

A typical market stretches for several hundred metres through the walled Old City and includes hundreds of vendors selling handicrafts, textiles, art and prepared food. The atmosphere is busiest in the early evening and can be crowded; seating and food stalls appear along the length of the route.

The markets developed as regular weekly events to showcase local artisans and produce and are run by local vendors and city authorities rather than being a single historic institution. They are contemporary urban markets rather than historic monuments.

The walking streets are located inside Chiang Mai’s Old City near Tha Phae Gate and other central landmarks, within easy walking distance of central Chiang Mai accommodations and transport hubs. Different markets operate on different nights, with the Sunday market on Ratchadamnoen Road being the best known.

• Saturday Night Market (Wualai Road): Wualai Road hosts the Saturday Night Market, a separate but similar street market that focuses on crafts, food and local performers in the old city area.

The best-known walking streets in Chiang Mai are Wualai Road, which closes to motorised traffic from around 3pm on Saturday afternoons, and Ratchadamnoen Road, which becomes a pedestrian precinct from about the same time on Sundays. Even if you are not into shopping, it is worth wandering along these streets to see the huge range of items on sale, mingle with locals and other visitors, and be entertained by street musicians.

Many of the items on display are examples of local arts and crafts that make excellent gifts or souvenirs, and since this is Thailand there is no shortage of stalls selling refreshing juices and snacks on sticks. Some goods are available for similar prices elsewhere in Chiang Mai, but nowhere else will you see such a range in one place. The markets are gradually expanding, with stalls spreading down all the side streets off the main walking street.

If you find something you want to buy, remember that bargaining is the norm here, mixed with plenty of friendly banter. Make friends with the stall keeper first and you are all but guaranteed to get their ‘best price’.

Within Chiang Mai’s Old City; easily reached on foot from most central guesthouses. Songthaews, tuk-tuks and bicycles are common short-distance options.
