Chiang Mai Walking Street

Chiang Mai Walking Street refers to the weekly night-market events held in Chiang Mai’s Old City, most famously the Sunday Walking Street along Ratchadamnoen Road. The market is a regular urban event featuring crafts, street food and street performances concentrated on specific evenings.

A typical market stretches for several hundred metres through the walled Old City and includes hundreds of vendors selling handicrafts, textiles, art and prepared food. The atmosphere is busiest in the early evening and can be crowded; seating and food stalls appear along the length of the route.

The markets developed as regular weekly events to showcase local artisans and produce and are run by local vendors and city authorities rather than being a single historic institution. They are contemporary urban markets rather than historic monuments.

The walking streets are located inside Chiang Mai’s Old City near Tha Phae Gate and other central landmarks, within easy walking distance of central Chiang Mai accommodations and transport hubs. Different markets operate on different nights, with the Sunday market on Ratchadamnoen Road being the best known.
