Changu Narayan Temple Religious Site

Changu Narayan Temple is a Hindu temple complex dedicated to Lord Vishnu located on a wooded hill near Bhaktapur in the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal. It is regarded as one of the oldest temple sites in the country and is part of the Kathmandu Valley UNESCO World Heritage area.

The complex features a principal pagoda‑style shrine surrounded by smaller shrines and a series of stone sculptures and carved reliefs. Notable elements include finely carved wooden struts, metalwork and stone inscriptions that display ancient iconography and serve as important examples of Nepalese religious art. The hilltop setting provides views over the surrounding valley and the medieval town of Bhaktapur.

The temple site has an extended history with inscriptions and sculptural evidence indicating its significance from early historic periods; the structure has undergone rebuilding and enlargement over centuries while remaining a major religious centre for the region. Successive rulers and local patrons contributed carvings and dedications that remain in the complex.

Changu Narayan is about 12-15 km east of central Kathmandu and a short drive from Bhaktapur. Regular taxis and tourist minibuses make the 30-45 minute trip; from Bhaktapur it’s a 10-15 minute ride or a pleasant if hilly walk.

• Visit early morning to hear temple priests begin the day and to avoid the mid-morning tour buses from Kathmandu.
• Observe shrine etiquette: remove shoes, keep voices low, and ask permission before photographing priests performing rituals.
• Walk the perimeter for small stone carvings and 17th-18th century inscriptions that many visitors miss.
