How to Get to Bhaktapur#
Bhaktapur is a short drive or microbus ride east of Kathmandu’s city centre and the main international airport (Tribhuvan). For most visitors it’s easiest to arrive at KTM and take a taxi or local bus into Bhaktapur; the town is compact and best explored on foot.
Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM): Kathmandu’s international airport is the main gateway to Bhaktapur and lies just east of central Kathmandu. Taxi from KTM to Bhaktapur takes about 20-40 minutes depending on traffic; typical taxi fares are NPR 700-NPR 1,200. Many hotels arrange pickups.
Gautam Buddha International Airport (BWA): Located near Bhairahawa (Lumbini), this airport is used for some international flights but is not a practical option for Bhaktapur compared with Kathmandu due to distance and onward travel time.
Train: Nepal has no intercity passenger rail service that connects to Bhaktapur.
Bus: Local buses and microbuses run from Kathmandu’s bus hubs (e.g., Ratna Park, New Road area) to Bhaktapur. The trip from central Kathmandu to Bhaktapur is typically 30-45 minutes by microbus or local bus and costs a few hundred NPR (often NPR 30-100). Bhaktapur sits close to Kathmandu and is easily reached from Tribhuvan Airport by taxi, microbus or tourist shuttle. Once there, the old city is best explored on foot with short trips by bike or local taxi as needed.
