Main image

Cathedral Square is the principal ceremonial square inside the Moscow Kremlin in central Moscow, formed by a cluster of Kremlin cathedrals and the Ivan the Great Bell Tower dating largely from the 15th to 17th centuries.

The open plaza is dominated by three principal churches and the bell tower. The complex includes the Assumption Cathedral, the Archangel Cathedral, and the Annunciation Cathedral, plus the Ivan the Great Bell Tower; these structures are the core reasons most visitors enter the Kremlin compound. The square functions as a compact ensemble of ecclesiastical architecture rather than a large public plaza.

The buildings around the square were erected and altered between the 15th and 17th centuries and served as the main liturgical and state-church space of Muscovite and Russian power. The site was used for coronations, major church ceremonies, and funerary rites of Moscow rulers, and it retained ceremonial importance under later regimes.

The square lies inside the Kremlin walls, immediately adjacent to Red Square in central Moscow, and is reached via the Kremlin’s public entrance points; it sits within the fortified Kremlin complex on the Moskva River plateau.

  • Access: Located immediately adjacent to Red Square inside the Moscow Kremlin; access requires entry to the Kremlin complex and its ticketed route.
  • Main features: The square contains multiple historic churches from the 15th-17th centuries, including three principal cathedrals and a major bell tower.

  • Annunciation Cathedral (Blagoveshchensky Sobor): Late 15th century urban church complex used by the Grand Princes and later the tsars for private worship and ceremonies; contains many gilded icon screens and chapels.
  • Ivan the Great Bell Tower: A tall bell tower adjacent to the square with historic bells and a prominent visual role in Kremlin views; dates to the 16th century with later alterations.
