Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula is the Roman Catholic cathedral in central Brussels and the seat of the archdiocese of Mechelen-Brussels. Construction of the present Gothic structure took place mainly between the 13th and 16th centuries.

The cathedral is characterised by its twin western towers and an expansive Gothic nave with notable stained-glass windows and a large historic organ. It continues to host major civic and religious ceremonies and is a principal landmark in Brussels’ historic centre.

Built over an earlier church, the current stone cathedral developed across several centuries from the high medieval period into the early modern era and became Brussels’ principal parish and ceremonial church.

The building stands between the Royal Park and the Place Royale in central Brussels, within easy walking distance of the Royal Palace and many national institutions.

• Best views: Good exterior photos are taken from the Place Royale and the Royal Park, which frame the building and its twin towers against the hill.

What to See#

• Twin towers: Twin western towers rise above the façade and are visible across the central district; their external height is commonly given in the mid-60-metre range.
• Nave and stained glass: The cathedral contains multiple stained-glass windows dating largely from the late medieval and early modern periods, along with a historic organ and carved choir stalls.
• Crypt and treasury: A crypt and small treasury hold reliquaries and liturgical objects associated with the cathedral’s long role as the city’s principal church.

In central Brussels, between the Royal Palace and the Grand Place. Metro: Parc/Park (Line 1 and 5) or De Brouckère (Lines 1, 3, 4, 5); it is a 5-10 minute walk from either station.

• Visit during weekday mid-morning to avoid Sunday service crowds and hear better organ acoustics.
• Stand in the nave near the main entrance and watch morning light slide across the 13th‑century stained glass-there are medieval panes from 1530 that reward attention.
• If visiting the treasury, ask about the silver reliquary of Saint Gudula-its filigree dates to medieval Brussels.
