Place Royale (French) / Koningsplein (Dutch) is a neoclassical public square on the Coudenberg plateau in central Brussels, created in the late 18th century on the site of the former Coudenberg palace. It is an established civic and cultural axis in the city, framed by classical façades and institutional buildings.

On and around the square visitors can see neoclassical architecture and access nearby museums and cultural sites; the square functions as a formal open space linking upper and lower areas of central Brussels. It is also used for official ceremonies and public gatherings.

The present square was laid out after the medieval Coudenberg palace was lost and a planned neoclassical ensemble was erected; construction and urban reorganization took place in the late 1700s and into the 19th century. The church and surrounding buildings date from that neoclassical rebuilding phase.

The square occupies a central position on the Coudenberg plateau in the Brussels-City municipality, immediately above the Mont des Arts and a short walk from Brussels Park and the Royal Palace. It is within the historic core of Brussels.

• Saint James on Coudenberg (Église Saint-Jacques-sur-Coudenberg): A neoclassical church completed in the late 18th century that stands on the north side of the square and serves as a clear architectural anchor for the plaza.
• Royal Museums and Mont des Arts area: A cluster of national museums and cultural institutions sits within short walking distance, including museums of fine arts that border the square and the nearby Mont des Arts garden.

Place Royale (Place du Musée / Koningsplein) sits on Rue Royale in central Brussels. From Bruxelles-Central / Brussel-Centraal station it’s an uphill walk of about 8-10 minutes along Rue Royale (Koningsstraat) to the square. You can also take the metro to Parc / Park station (Lines 1 and 5) and walk roughly 5 minutes downhill to the square. By car it’s in the inner city (follow Rue Royale from the small ring/R20); expect limited on-street parking.

• Visit early morning for soft light and far fewer tourists; the square's perspective toward the Royal Palace and Mont des Arts is best before the museums open.
• Approach from Rue Royale / Rue de la Régence to arrive directly at the neoclassical façades and avoid the larger tour groups that pour down from Mont des Arts.
• Don't miss the small neoclassical Church of Saint-Jacques-sur-Coudenberg and the archeological remains of Coudenberg just below the square - they are easy to overlook when focusing on the palace facades.
