Castries Travel Guide
City Capital city of Saint Lucia
Castries’ harbor and open-air market announce arrival on Saint Lucia. Visitors pass through for ferries, Creole food stalls, fresh fish and spices, excursions into nearby hills like Morne Fortune, and as a jumping-off point for island boat trips.
Why Visit Castries? #
The capital mixes Caribbean port energy with Creole culture, making it a practical and colorful stop for many visitors. The Castries Market and Derek Walcott Square put local produce, spices and handicrafts on display, while nearby harbor promenades feed into seafood restaurants and rum shops. How to Get to Castries
Castries is served by two airports: the small George F. L. Charles Airport (SLU) right by the city and the larger Hewanorra International (UVF) at the southern end of the island. Most visitors arrive at UVF or SLU and then use taxis, shuttles or minibuses to reach Castries.
George F. L. Charles Airport (SLU): Small domestic airport beside the northern edge of Castries that handles regional flights from nearby islands and short Air Charter services. From SLU to central Castries it’s a short 10-15 minute drive; expect a taxi to cost around EC$25-40 and shared minibus rides roughly EC$3-5 per person (15-20 minutes depending on traffic).
Hewanorra International Airport (UVF): International airport near Vieux Fort at the southern tip of the island (serves long-haul and some regional flights). The road trip to Castries is about 70-90 minutes by car. Shuttle buses and shared transfers run between UVF and Castries for about EC$25-40 per person (approx. 75-90 minutes); private taxis are common and typically cost EC$120-180 depending on negotiation and number of passengers (fixed rates often apply).
Train: There is no train network on Saint Lucia.
Bus / Minibuses (shared taxis): The island’s primary public transport is yellow minibuses and shared taxis that run from Castries’ main bus area (near the city market/harbour) to towns across the island. Typical fares are EC$3-5 for short hops (Castries-Gros Islet ~20-30 minutes) and EC$8-12 for longer trips (Castries-Soufrière ~1.5-2 hours). Minibuses leave when full, so expect variable departure times.
How to Get Around Castries #
Castries is compact enough to explore on foot in the central areas around the harbour, especially the market and waterfront. Public transport consists mainly of minibuses (route taxis) and shared taxis; private taxis and rental cars are widely available. Drive on the left. If you’re arriving by cruise ship, many attractions are walkable from the port, but for island-wide travel use hired taxis or minibuses and allow time for traffic around peak hours.
