High / low are average daily temperatures (°C). “Feels” reflects how hot or cold it feels, allowing for humidity.
Barlavento Highlands (Santo Antão & São Nicolau)
May tends to be the driest of the pre-rain months at altitude, with warm days and pleasantly cool evenings; highs commonly sit in the low-to-mid 20s. The highlands feel less humid than the lowlands, so walking long ridge routes is comfortable; however, streams may be low so carry water. This is a popular time for local weekend treks, so expect moderate foot traffic.
São Vicente & Mindelo (urban & cultural coast)
May delivers warmer afternoons and steady northeastern breezes; local life slows as the beach culture ramps up on weekends. Water temperature begins to warm and boat operators run more trips to São Nicolau and Santo Antão. Expect fewer tourists than Sal, but plan for occasional windy days that can cancel small-boat journeys to outlying coves.
Sal & Boa Vista (beaches, dunes and resorts)
May warms up with very little rainfall; days are hot and dry and resorts around Santa Maria get busier for the European summer trickle. Wind conditions are excellent for kitesurfing downwind runs but beaches can be gusty for casual swimmers. Ferries run regularly but any onshore wind can create whitecaps, so plan water-based excursions in the morning when seas are often calmer.
Santiago (Praia, Cidade Velha & interior hills)
May warms and humidifies slightly as you approach the rainy window, though significant showers are still uncommon on much of Santiago. Rural valleys show reserve moisture in agricultural areas, and touring Cidade Velha’s historical sites is comfortable in the cooler mornings. Expect fewer tourists than Sal; independent travelers can find good-value guesthouses and local eateries.
Fogo & Brava (volcanic heights and sheltered southern isles)
May tends to be dry and increasingly warm at low elevations while the caldera keeps cooler temperatures; Fogo’s crater rim is excellent for sunrise treks. Brava’s sheltered plazas are pleasant for day walks without the crowds. Water in higher settlements remains limited at times, so plan logistics for overnight treks and carry extra water when exploring remote paths.
