About Büyükada

Büyükada is the largest of the Princes’ Islands in the Sea of Marmara and administratively part of Istanbul; it has long been a popular summer retreat for city residents. The island is characterised by car-free streets, wooden Ottoman-era villas, and a village clustered around a central harbour.

Getting There & Around

How to Get to Büyükada

Take a car ferry or passenger ferry from Istanbul-ferries run from terminals such as Kabataş, Kadıköy and Bostancı (Şehir Hatları and private operators) to Büyükada. The ferry lands at the island’s main quay and the island town is only a few minutes’ walk from the dock; no cars are used on the island (transport by foot, bicycle or horse‑drawn carriage).

Tips for Visiting Büyükada

  • Take the ferry from Kabataş (Şehir Hatları) early in the morning on a weekday to avoid weekend and holiday crowds and to get first access to popular spots like the main town pier.
  • Walk or rent a bicycle once ashore-follow the waterfront past the main jetty to reach the quieter southern mansions and the pine-clad eastern beaches that many visitors miss.
  • Climb Aya Yorgi (Hristos) hill for panoramic views at sunset; the uphill path from the main square is the most direct route and far less crowded than the beaches during late afternoon.
