The Pera Museum is an art and cultural museum in the Beyoğlu district of Istanbul, founded and run by the Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation and opened in 2005.

The museum occupies a converted late 19th-century hotel building in Beyoğlu; the foundation that established the museum assembled its core collections and opened the space to the public in the early 21st century.

Situated in central Beyoğlu, the museum sits on the European side of Istanbul close to Taksim and the Istiklal Avenue district.

• Tortoise Trainer: Home to Osman Hamdi Bey’s well-known painting “The Tortoise Trainer”, frequently cited as a highlight of the collection.
• Building and founding: Housed in a late 19th-century building that was formerly the Bristol Hotel and opened as the Pera Museum by the Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation in 2005.

What to See#

• Orientalist Paintings: Contains the Orientalist Paintings Collection, including major works by Ottoman and European artists from the 19th century.
• Weights, measures and ceramics: Holds the Anatolian Weights and Measures collection, and a ceramics gallery with Kütahya tiles and Ottoman-era pieces.

Located in Tepebaşı (Beyoğlu) on İstiklal Avenue; take the Tünel or tram to Tophane and walk, or use nearby taxis and buses.

• Check rotating exhibitions-the museum often hosts international loan shows that are worth timing a visit around.
• Allow time to see the Kütahya tiles and Orientalist paintings which are Pera's signature displays.
• On Thursday evenings the museum sometimes offers extended hours-check the calendar.
