Üsküdar sits on the Asian shore of the Bosphorus from Salacak up to Beylerbeyi and the big Çamlıca hill. The waterfront promenades, ferry piers and neighbourhood mosques give it a quietly scenic, everyday feel rather than a tourist-clustered one.

During the day you’ll find tea gardens, small cafés and local markets along the shore and in streets such as Selmani Pak and İskele; evenings are mellow, with families and couples strolling for views of the European shore. Landmark stops include Beylerbeyi Palace and the hilltop Çamlıca Mosque, while smaller Ottoman mosques and waterfront tea houses are sprinkled throughout the district.

Üsküdar runs along the Asian Bosphorus shore between Salacak (south) and Beylerbeyi (north). The main ferry and rail hub is Üsküdar İskele (ferry piers and Marmaray); Altunizade and Kısıklı lie inland along the D100 main road and Metrobus corridor.

Plan Your Visit to Üsküdar

  • Carry an Istanbulkart: Use the shared smartcard for ferries, Marmaray and buses to save fares.
  • Visit at sunset: The Salacak waterfront offers the best skyline photos as lights come on.
  • Dress respectfully: Wear modest clothing when visiting mosque interiors.
  • Avoid peak commuting hours: Marmaray and ferries are crowded during weekday rush hours.
