How to Get to Butare
Butare (also known as Huye) has no commercial airport - most visitors arrive via Kigali International Airport (KGL) and continue by road. The simplest routes are intercity buses or private transfers from Kigali; local travel in Butare is quick and compact.
Kigali International Airport (KGL): Kigali is the main gateway for international arrivals to reach Butare (Huye). From the airport you can take a private taxi directly to Butare (roughly 2-2.5 hours by road); expect to pay about 60,000-80,000 RWF for a one-way private transfer. A cheaper option is to take a short taxi or moto from the airport to Nyabugogo Bus Terminal in Kigali (about 1,500-3,000 RWF, 20-40 minutes depending on traffic) and catch an intercity bus to Huye/Butare (see Bus card) - total door-to-door ~2.5-3.5 hours.
Butare (no commercial airport): Butare itself has no scheduled commercial passenger airport. The nearest major airport for international and most domestic connections is Kigali International Airport (KGL) - see above. (Small airstrips and private-charter options exist elsewhere in Rwanda but there are no regular commercial flights into Butare.)
Train: Rwanda currently does not operate a national passenger rail service. There are no passenger train stations serving Butare; overland travel is made by road buses, minibuses and taxis.
Bus: Intercity buses and minibuses run between Kigali (Nyabugogo Bus Terminal) and Huye/Butare (Huye Bus Park). Common operators include intercity/coaster services and independent companies; the bus trip typically takes about 2.5-3 hours and fares are commonly in the range of 2,500-4,000 RWF. Buses depart regularly from Nyabugogo - buy tickets at the terminal or from the operator before boarding.
How to Get Around Butare
Butare is compact and best explored on foot for the central sights; for longer trips the intercity buses from Nyabugogo or a private transfer from Kigali are most practical. For quick local hops use moto-taxis; hire a car or private driver if you need flexibility or plan day trips outside town.
- Intercity bus (2,500-4,000 RWF) - Regular buses and coaster minibuses run between Kigali (Nyabugogo Bus Terminal) and Huye/Butare (Huye Bus Park). Trips take about 2.5-3 hours depending on traffic; tickets are typically bought at the departure terminal or from the operator. Buses are the most economical option for solo travellers and run several times daily.
- Taxi (private) (2,000-10,000 RWF (in town); 60,000-80,000 RWF (Kigali↔Butare transfer)) - Metered city taxis are available but many drivers expect agreed fares for intercity trips. A private taxi from Kigali airport or Kigali centre to Butare is convenient and door-to-door, taking about 2-2.5 hours; agree the price in advance for one-way transfers. For short in-town trips, expect to negotiate or ask for the meter; fares are reasonable for groups but higher than sharing public transport.
- Moto-taxi (moto) (300-1,500 RWF) - Motorcycle taxis are a fast way to move around Butare and reach places not well served by cars. Negotiate the fare before you ride and insist on a helmet - short hops in town commonly cost a few hundred to a couple thousand RWF. Motos are ideal for narrow streets and short errands but are less comfortable with luggage or in bad weather.
- Car hire / Private transfer (60,000-120,000 RWF per day (rental); 60,000-80,000 RWF one-way transfer) - Hiring a car (with or without driver) from Kigali or arranging a private transfer is the most flexible option, especially if you plan day trips (e.g., to Nyanza). Daily rental rates vary widely; hiring a car with a driver for a one-way transfer to Butare is common and removes the stress of negotiating local fares. Roads between Kigali and Butare are paved and generally in good condition, though travel times depend on traffic and stops.
- Bicycle (2,000-6,000 RWF per day) - Butare's compact centre and relatively gentle terrain make cycling a pleasant way to explore - the town is bicycle-friendly compared with larger Rwandan cities. Some guesthouses and local shops offer bike rentals for a day or half-day; roads can be busy near main junctions, so stick to quieter streets and wear a helmet. Cycling is a good option for visiting the museum, university area and nearby neighborhoods.
- Walking - Butare's central area is very walkable: the National Museum, university campus, markets and many cafés are within easy walking distance of each other. Walking is often the quickest way to get between nearby sights and lets you experience local life up close.
