Bulgaria has four airports with scheduled commercial service, and the main arrival point for international travelers is Sofia Airport (SOF). As the country’s primary gateway, SOF is the natural starting point for time in Sofia and easy onward trips into regions like Sofia & Vitosha, the Rila and Pirin mountains, and the Plovdiv & the Thracian plain.
Along the Black Sea coast, Varna Airport (VAR) and Burgas Airport (BOJ) matter for reaching Bulgaria’s major coastal cities and resort areas, including Varna, Burgas, Nesebar, Sozopol, and Sunny Beach. Inland, Plovdiv International Airport (PDV) links to Bulgaria’s second city, Plovdiv, known for its Roman theatre and Old Town, and can be a convenient entry for exploring the Thracian plain.
With only these four airports handling scheduled traffic, domestic flying is limited in scope and often complements overland travel between key cities and regions rather than replacing it.
